PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania: Comcast is planning job cuts at its largest division, which runs its Xfinity broadband, mobile and pay-TV business, as part of a restructuring aimed at streamlining operations and boosting competitiveness, a source familiar with the matter said.
Beginning in January, the company will eliminate a layer of management between corporate and regional offices, according to a memo sent to employees. Regional leaders will instead report directly to a new executive in charge of nationwide operations.
The source said layoffs will follow, though Comcast is still deciding which roles will be consolidated at headquarters. Customer-facing teams in retail and service will not be affected.
"This change is not a reflection of anyone's contributions — it is about simplifying how we work so we can compete more effectively," the memo said.
In recent years, the Xfinity unit has undergone several rounds of centralization, with functions such as marketing, legal, and finance being moved to the corporate level. Comcast also introduced national pricing to replace city-by-city rates and, in April, launched new broadband packages with five-year price locks to retain customers.
The shake-up comes as Comcast grapples with subscriber losses in its core internet business and faces mounting competition from wireless carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
The company did not disclose how many jobs would be cut.
