LONDON, U.K.: A Chinese national described by London police as one of the most prolific sex offenders they have ever investigated has been jailed for life after admitting to multiple rapes, sexual assaults, and acts of voyeurism against six women.
Police said 33-year-old Chao Xu exploited his university and professional networks to identify and groom victims, earning their trust before drugging and raping some of them. Investigators believe hundreds more may have been targeted through his extensive voyeurism, both in Britain and China.
"Chao Xu is among the most dangerous and prolific sexual offenders we have ever encountered," said Detective Superintendent Lewis Sanderson. "His crimes were calculated, sustained, and devastating, spanning years and causing unimaginable harm."
Xu's crimes came to light after he attacked a woman during a networking event he hosted at his southeast London home. Although he drugged her, she later recalled fragments of the assault, including Xu filming her with his phone, and alerted police.
Officers arrested Xu and uncovered extensive evidence on his devices, including videos confirming he had drugged and raped women while they were unconscious. Investigators also found hidden cameras throughout his home, along with thousands of images and recordings.
Xu pleaded guilty at Woolwich Crown Court to four counts of rape, eight of assault by penetration, four of sexual assault, two of administering substances with intent, four of voyeurism, and two counts of upskirting. He must serve at least 14 years before he can be considered for release.
Police are still reviewing digital material seized from Xu, including six million WeChat messages and thousands of images and videos, which may help identify additional victims.
