COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah: Discount airlines Breeze Airways has raised $200 million in a second round of financing, officials announced on August 18.
Over $100 million was earlier raised by Breeze Aviation Group to support the start of scheduled flights in May. The carrier is currently flying passengers to 16 cities in the United States and operating 39 routes.
Breeze officials said it will use the new funding to expand its operations.
Founder David Neeleman remarked on August 18 that Breeze had flown 100,000 passengers since beginning service in May.
The company, with 13 aircraft, is prioritizing flight services for smaller cities in the United States, since large airlines offer fewer direct services. The carrier is operating flights to cities such as Akron, Charleston, Connecticut, Hartford, Louisville, Norfolk, New Orleans, Oklahoma, Tulsa, Tampa and Virginia.
The company's chief executive noted during an interview that the new funds demonstrated that the carrier is "here to stay."
The $200 million in funding, said Neeleman, will enable the company to "be opportunistic about some airplanes that might be available," as quoted by Reuters.
"It is just getting the word out," Neeleman stated, while highlighting that the company has been profitable on several of its new routes.
"We're off to a good start," Neeleman noted.
The budget carrier will take delivery of one Airbus A220 per month beginning in October, to continue for five years.
