KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: The Malaysian speaker of parliament has confirmed that former prime minister Najib Razak has applied for a royal pardon, less than two weeks after he was sentenced to 12 years in prison on corruption charges.
Najib, 69, was convicted of graft and money laundering charges in a case linked to a multibillion-dollar scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
He also has also been fined nearly $50 million.
On 23rd August, Malaysia's top court rejected his appeal. Najib has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
According to Malaysia's constitution, unless a convicted prisoner applies for a pardon from the monarch within 14 days of being sentenced, any lawmaker receiving more than a year in prison will automatically lose their seat in parliament.
If given a full pardon, Najib could return to politics and even become prime minister again, something some of his supporters have called for.
However, he still faces four other charges that carry potential jail terms and heavy fines.
