YANGON, Myanmar: Myanmar's Supreme Court will hear an appeal by former leader Aung San Suu Kyi seeking to reduce her 33-year jail sentence.
After being arrested by the military after a February 2021 coup against her elected government, Suu Kyi, 78, was convicted of various offenses, ranging from incitement, election fraud and corruption.
Her supporters and Western governments have condemned Suu Kyi's imprisonment by the country's military junta.
The Supreme Court has announced it will hear appeals against Suu Kyi's conviction for a breach of the official secrets act and for electoral fraud.
Countering criticism from human rights groups over the jailing of pro-democracy activists in secret trials, and the resumption of executions after a decades-long hiatus, the military junta claims that defendants are guaranteed due process by an independent judiciary.
After the military launched its coup, claiming irregularities in a November 2020 election that Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party won in a landslide, Myanmar has experienced ongoing conflict.
The now dissolved National League for Democracy has denied that election fraud occurred.
