JAKARTA, Indonesia: Indonesia's deputy minister of state-owned enterprises Rosan Roeslani said that this week, Chinese Premier Li Qiang will attend a trial run of a US$7.3 billion high-speed rail project in Jakarta.
Li is visiting Jakarta to attend the East Asia summit and other meetings this week, which US Vice President Kamala Harris will also participate in.
The flagship project of Indonesian President Joko Widodo, which is part of China's Belt and Road Initiative and has received Chinese funding, has faced many delays, including the COVID-19 pandemic, rising costs, and land procurement issues.
The 88-mile railway connecting the capital Jakarta to the city of Bandung was originally planned for launch in 2019, but is now scheduled to start on October 1.
"Testing will be done on September 6 in the afternoon, attended by China's premier," Roeslani said, adding that senior Indonesian minister Luhut Pandjaitan will accompany those attending.
This week, President Widodo warned against the Southeast Asian bloc getting dragged into big-power rivalry.
