Getting his reps:Steelers fans could see a fair share of quarterback Skylar Thompson on Saturday night against the Jaguars, with rookie Will Howard dealing with a hand injury.
The distribution of playing time at the quarterback position has yet to be announced by Coach Mike Tomlin, but it's likely Thompson will get his fair share of snaps.
"It's definitely not the way you want an opportunity to get more reps," said Thompson. "But I've been preparing this whole time as if I am the guy getting the reps. So really nothing is going to change, other than me physically getting them now.
"I'm looking forward to the opportunity and getting out there and going to play some football."
Thompson signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Steelers following the 2024 season.
He was originally drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh-round of the 2022 NFL Draft and appeared in 10 games over three seasons, including starting three, and has thrown for 721 yards and one touchdown.
With the pecking order at quarterback, Thompson doesn't get as many reps as he is accustomed to in the past. But he has been taking advantage of every rep he does get.
"Being in a position where I'm not getting as many reps as I have in years past, that's just a different dynamic to it," said Thompson. "There are different ways to continue to stay on top of your stuff and still get those reps. The biggest challenge for me up to this point has been getting mental reps. Even though I'm not the guy out there, still getting the rep and learning from whatever I can learn.
"That's been just an adjustment, something different than what I've experienced in the past. I've gotten the most out of that and have been still improving and getting better from those reps, whether it's me in there or not."
Fellow quarterback Mason Rudolph, who said he isn't sure what the division of labor will be, knows you just always have to be ready for whatever comes your way.
"We have to go execute. We have to play well," said Rudolph. "Preseason games are always interesting. You are in for a few series, and you are out. That is sort of the life of a backup quarterback and that prepares you well for the regular season.
"It helps you become light on your feet. It's fun."
Ready for some football:The Steelers kick it into overdrive this week, preparing for their first preseason game on Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
And defensive end Yahya Black, the fifth-round pick out of Iowa, is ready for game day.
"I am ready to play some football," said Black. "I've just been waiting since January. You only get a little bit of it here and there and now you actually get to go play a game.
"I want to show the reason I was drafted. The reason I was brought out here is just to play football and be a physical presence."
At 6-5, 330, no doubt Black is a physical presence. And he has been combining that physicality with the mental side of the game to improve on a daily basis since he arrived in Pittsburgh after the NFL Draft.
"We have an older group of guys, so I am learning from everyone," said Black. "It doesn't matter who it is, I get to learn from everyone and hear their thoughts and what they think and what they see. So, I am just grasping at everything I can."
The defensive line does have their share of experience, starting with their leader in Cameron Heyward. And none of the players have been shy about helping to bring along Black, as well as fellow rookie defensive lineman Derrick Harmon, and he appreciates it.
"To be honest with you, I didn't know what I was expecting from the veterans," said Black. "You hear both sides of it, vets always helping out or vets just not really caring. I got the good end of the stick and am able to hear what the vets think and them just helping me along the way."
Game vibes:Football is back, and that means it's time to put everything on the line.
The Steelers take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night in the preseason opener, and the players are starting to feel the hype building.
"It's going to be awesome," said rookie running back Kaleb Johnson. "It's one of my dreams. So, I'm just ready to go out there and keep doing me."
After weeks of going against their teammates in practice, the preseason gives players, especially on defense, the opportunity to go all out.
"You always get to a point where the preseason games start to peep up a little bit, and then you start to get the urge," said defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk. "We're not going to be going against teammates anymore. We are going against other people.
"When you're in a practice setting like this, you go all out, but at the same time it's your teammates you're going against, so there are certain things that you kind of got to take a step back, make sure you don't do, big hits and stuff like that.
"We've been tackling, but when it comes to it playing another team, it's a completely different story. There, you can fully get after it, especially as a d-lineman. We don't have to pull off the quarterback. We can actually go get the sack now."
Standard reaction:Defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko admitting he almost had his hand broken when shaking hands with rookie defensive lineman Derrick Harmon for the first time didn't inspire much of a reaction from the Steelers' No. 1 pick.
It's not the first time Harmon has gotten such a response.
"Definitely on my Combine, on my 30 visits, every time I shook a coach's hand they said something about it," Harmon said. "That just comes from being younger, old heads always telling me, 'Shake a man's hand like it's your first impression. You only got one impression.'"
Harmon has made quite a first impression in his first training camp. He's been running with the No. 1s since Day One at Saint Vincent College and his power rushes have been especially impactful in practices, especially those conducted in pads.
"Really just trying to do my best out here, man, learn this playbook, learn my role within this defense and just play to a high level," he said.
Harmon was the only rookie designated as a starter on either side of the ball on the depth chart the Steelers' released, the first one of camp. That didn't make much of an impression on Harmon, either.
"Just gotta work, man," he said. "I don't feel like anything's really handed to you. In this league you really have to work for everything you get and everything you do out here. No shortcuts in this league, there's a lot of good guys, a lot of great competition around. You gotta bring your 'A' game every day.
"It's football at the end of the day. Only thing here, there are a lot more speed, a lot more fast things happening. You gotta see things a lot quicker in this league."
Harmon was the first front seven investment the Steelers made in the draft but he has company in that capacity in fourth-round outside linebacker Jack Sawyer and fifth-round defensive lineman Yahya Black.
They're approaching their rookie seasons as a linked threesome in terms of what's being expected from them and what they intend to deliver.
"Most definitely, man," Harmon said. "We all came in together. We know what goal we came in with as rookies in that D-line room. All three of us are really just trying to learn from our old heads and get this playbook down and really just dominate, show what we can do at a high level."

Watt to expect:The Steelers depth chart came out on Tuesday, and T.J. Watt is listed in his normal spot at left outside linebacker.
Don't look for that to change, well at least not much.
Watt and Alex Highsmith continue to work on flipping sides in practice, something to just mix things up and keep opposing offenses guessing.
"We've been doing it," said Watt. "It's not something that we're doing every single day. I think we're picking days to kind of work on it.
"I'd rather work on one side for that day just to get more reps at it as opposed to going over there for a rep here or there. It's something that we are going to continue to do."
It's not as easy as it sounds, flipping from one side to another, but it's something Watt has been working on the last year or so, and he knows what advantage it can bring.
"I think it's just something that's not as comfortable," said Watt. "But working on getting it to be more comfortable."
While he might be looking to gain comfort there, one area where he does feel comfort is with the strength of the defense. He isn't about to anoint them the best he has played on yet, as they haven't even taken the field for a game yet, but he still likes the changes they made in the offseason and mesh well with what was already in place.
"It's too early to tell," said Watt. "Everybody looks good this time of year. Until we get into the stadium with another team. Until we allow the offense to continue to make more adjustments to attack us, allow us to make more adjustments to see how many guys are willing to tackle. All those things are still yet to be determined."
One of the things Watt likes about the defense is the blitzing that can come from the inside linebackers in Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson, giving the outside rushers more help and freeing them up to do other things.
"It's huge," said Watt. "Payton's playing fast, PQ's playing fast, both of them second year in the system. Anytime you get those huggers coming as quickly as they are, it allows us to have those one-on-one pass rush opportunities.
"The quicker those guys play, the better it is for everybody."
After missing the offseason workouts and minicamp while in contract talks, Watt has gradually worked his way back into practice mode, not working every day in camp, but managing it so he will be ready when the bright lights are on to start the regular season. Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar often is the one to make sure Watt doesn't overdo it, sitting him when he knows the time is right to save him for the days ahead.
"I think taking care of us, making sure that even if we want to practice, making us take days off and just being smart," said Watt. "I think more than anything, when you play for Karl Dunbar and (outside linebackers coach) Denzel Martin, you want to turn on the film and see physical football players using their hands, turning their hips, making sure those things are ready so that when it's game time, we don't have to warm up to it.
"As the years go on, I don't practice as much, but I still feel good. It's just a matter of getting that individual work, working on the right side and doing things.
"It's being more and more comfortable with the system. Not feeling like I have to be ready right now, even though I feel great. It's just a slow ramp up, a slow build to the season. I don't have to have my best days right now. I can continue to try new things and have fun with it."
On the run:For a rookie, having a veteran step up and be that solid guiding force is a key.
And running back Kaleb Johnson knows how lucky he is to have a few veterans at his position in Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell to assist him.
Warren in particular has been with Johnson from the moment he arrived in Pittsburgh as a third-round draft pick out of Iowa, helping him adapt to the offense and learn the tricks of the trade.
"He means a lot to me," said Johnson of Warren. "I help him, he helps me. Even though he is a vet, I am helping him. He knows what needs to be done around here. Just trying to learn from him. That is it."
Johnson and Warren will often spend time working on the side during practice, with the veteran sharing whatever he can to help as it benefits the team overall.
"Every day he always asks me, what do I think I can get better at?" said Johnson. "I tell him, and he says you want to work on techniques and I'm doing it. I never second guess it. It's always yes."
With the help of the vets, and the daily repetition, Johnson feels like he is getting more and more comfortable in the offense.
"It feels like it's related to Iowa a little bit, but it's more detailed," said Johnson of the offense. "I really like it. It's really simple and everybody understands what they're doing, so there's not a lot of confusion."
Young, but experienced:Last year one of the big topics on the Steelers offensive line was their age, with rookies Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick stepping into the starting lineup.
With a year under their belt, and tackle Troy Fautanu returning after spending his rookie season on the Reserve/Injured List, there is still youth, but there is also experience and that is something that guard Spencer Anderson is excited about.
"I feel like we're in a good spot," said Anderson. "Obviously, we brought back the majority of the guys we had last year. We have some younger guys. I know we say young, but Mason's older than me but they're young as far as NFL playing days, guys like Zach, Troy and Mason.
"I feel we're in good shape. We've got good leaders in Max (Scharping), Isaac (Seumalo) and then Calvin (Anderson). So, I think we're a good spot."
Anderson has shuffled around on the offensive line since joining the Steelers, but this year he feels like he is ready to settle in and sees himself at one spot.
"Being a guard," said Anderson. "I think my tackle days are put to rest, but I don't know. We'll see wherever I'm needed, I'll be at and put my best foot forward."
He is looking forward to what is ahead with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, an opportunity to protect a Future Hall of Famer who has already showed the type of leader he is in a short time.
"He's a good guy, comes from a good place," said Anderson. "I can tell he's the leader in that little bit of time that he's been here.
"I'm excited to see what he can bring to the team. Obviously, I know he'll bring leadership."
Home sweet home:The Super Bowl XLIII ring that Trai Essex wore as he stood on the field at Saint Vincent College was shining as brightly as the smile on his face as he was happy to be back at the place where he took part in training camp from 2005-2011.
Essex, the former guard and two-time Super Bowl champ, enjoyed his return to see the Steelers practice and take it all in.
"Lot of great memories here," said Essex. "The greatest thing about this place is the fans that come out here in droves just to watch us practice. I haven't played in 12 years, and it was like I played yesterday the way they treat me.
"It's just awesome coming back and just being in a place where I spent eight of my best years ever and seeing some familiar faces like yourself, Mike Marchinsky, Coach (Mike) Tomlin and Garrett Giemont. So many familiar faces that bring back all the best things that ever happened in my career here."
Essex brought his daughter, Amiyah, who was born in Pittsburgh with him but was only four months old when he left. He wanted her to experience why he loves the organization so much.
"The first thing Coach Tomlin said to me was make yourself at home, and he says that to everybody that comes back," said Essex. "That means so much to me, especially now that I have my oldest daughter here with me, and she's a Yinzer. This is her first time really getting the whole experience, and the way Coach Tomlin presents it, it makes it that much more special for me when I bring my family here."

Taking it to the next level:One percent.
It might not seem like a lot, but over time, it adds up.
And linebacker Patrick Queen is well aware of that.
His goal on a daily basis is to get one percent better, knowing it will get him to where he wants to be.
"Every single day you've got to come out here and grind," said Queen. "It's never going to be given to you. Especially on Sundays, when you're playing against a different team, they don't like you.
"I think the biggest thing is just being able to get one percent better every single day, know every single detail of the defense inside and out, and just come out and ready to work.
"Get one percent better every single day."
It's not just an approach Queen has, but one the defense takes to heart as a whole as well. He sees where the defense is a few weeks into training camp, a defense that is ahead of the game compared to a year ago.
There is still work to do, though.
"I think we're farther ahead than last year, but still not where we need to be," said Queen. "It's an everyday grind, everyday battle that we've got to come in and have the mindset to get better, just one percent better.
"There are days when some people aren't going to have it, and some people are going to have it. The days that people have it we've got to give it to others and just bring them along. It's a team thing. It's a defensive thing. It's a brotherhood.
"Everybody's got everybody's back and we're just coming out here and trying to do that every single day and just getting better."
The defense came out with a motivation in camp to improve on what they did in 2024, not have the same results and take it to the next level.
"Everybody understands what happened last year, and don't want to repeat that," said Queen. "It starts at the top and works its way down. We've been getting great details on the assignments that we need to do, and right now we're executing."
Queen envisions the defense coming out with an aggressive approach this year, being an attacking group.
He also knows that has to happen at the right time.
"I think it depends on who you're playing," said Queen. "There are risks involved with that. You've just got to be smart about who it's against and when you're doing it.
"But I definitely think we'll be more aggressive."
Voice of experience:Experience is something that can't be measured, and the experience that 13-year veteran receiver Robert Woods brings to the offense is something younger players are taking advantage of.
Woods is a wealth of information for some of the younger players on offense, and it's not just all football.
"From DBs, to receivers, running backs, whether it's diet, route depth, how you take care of your body," said Woods. "I feel like everybody is focusing on this camp and just trying to get this whole team better."
It's not always common to have defensive backs come to a receiver for advice, but it's something Woods is open to.
"I feel like they're all asking, what were you thinking on that route. Or why did you go outside on that," said Woods. "Just leverage and making guys think. You don't want to always have the same route patterns. You want to have it disguised a little bit.
"Sometimes we go out to go in, sometimes we go out to go out. We always want to keep the defense on their toes. And for them, I just tell them, play it honest. Whatever leverage you're playing, keep it and make the receivers go through you."
Ready for his shot:The smacking of the pads has been heard during Steelers training camp over the last week and there is one player who has a little more motivation.
Defensive lineman Logan Lee.
Lee suffered a calf injury last year in the preseason, ending his rookie year before it even began as he spent the season sidelined.
Now he is thrilled to be back in the pads, doing what he loves most.
"It's a great opportunity for me to be able to actually show my skillset because I was mainly just training in the offseason," said Lee. "I'm not taking any of these opportunities for granted. It is going to be a key. I'm beyond blessed."
Lee has made immense progress since suffering the injury last season, taking part in the offseason program and the early days of camp, getting through what was a challenging first season in the NFL.
"It was very challenging, being a competitor, wanting to be able to contribute, but it wasn't my year," said Lee. "I truly trust in the Lord's timing, and I pray that it's time. I'm grateful for the opportunity, it's going to be a good year.
"I've come so far just mentally, physically, spiritually. I'm in a great spot. I've been beyond blessed thus far and I'm looking forward to progressing and seeing what I'm capable of."
Lee knows the intensity will pick today, right where he wants it to be as he shows what he is capable of.
"It's certainly more football-like," said Lee. "It's trending towards athat direction. It's certainly not football yet, but it's definitely becoming more and more like it as we progress.
"This is a lot of one-on-one opportunity, pass rush wise and run progression stuff. It's a good opportunity for us to work on our fundamentals with the offense in full pads as it is becoming more and more football-like."
Back to his old stomping grounds:Josh Miller stood on the sideline at Chuck Noll Field at Saint Vincent College, laughing while someone joked with him if he could still go out there and boom a few punts.
The former Steelers punter smiled and shook his head, knowing that wasn't happening.
But what happened was Miller had a nice return to the Steelers training camp, a place he hadn't been for about five years.
"I'm embarrassed to say how long it's been," said Miller. "It's been a while, probably five years when I was here for an offseason event the team did."
Coming back to see the team practice was something even more special for Miller, who played for the Steelers from 1996-2003.
"I love being here," said Miller. "For me it's a magic carpet ride because not too many things change. I just love coming back. The people seem to be the same, and it's a great place.
"I am so happy the team still comes to Latrobe as opposed to just doing it at the practice facility on the South Side."
Miller even had an opportunity to connect with a few former teammates who are at camp, a chance to reminisce a little.
"I love it. I love seeing everyone still with us," said Miller. "I was happy to come back here, see the guys, hug it up, exchange a couple stories, see that they're doing good, and take it all in. It really is a family."
And that family atmosphere, which includes Coach Mike Tomlin welcoming the alumni back with open arms, is something that warms Miller's heart.
"I see why the players love him," said Miller. "Coach (Bill) Cowher was the same way. They get it. It starts with the Rooneys setting that bar. This is a family, let's not ever forget that.
"Whatever version and area you are involved with. It's just refreshing that they're keeping it going."

Coming into their own:The Steelers have been going at it against each other in camp for the past two weeks and you could feel the intensity picking up on a daily basis, something the defense truly thrives on.
"I think we're finally coming into our own," said linebacker Nick Herbig. "We've got a lot of guys who've played a lot of football on the defense, a lot of experience.
"So, I think it's about time for us to put on a show."
The defense put on a show in practice on Sunday, winning two rounds of seven shots.
"That's what we're expected to do," said Herbig. "We're the Pittsburgh Steelers. We're the Steel Curtain. We play great defense, and that's a testament to the offense, that they're able to go against us all the time.
"So, it's just iron on iron, and we make each other better every day."
Herbig himself is seeing his game improve through the work in camp, including his run stopping defense. While all outside linebackers love the thrill of sacks, Herbig also welcomes the dirty work.
"Don't get me wrong, there's no feeling like a strip sack, but I take great pride in the run game," said Herbig. "You can't get a third down if you don't stop them on first and second down. So, I take great pride in that.
"Coach (Mike) Tomlin loves to mess with me and tell me I don't like to play the run, but I like to show them otherwise."
Not a happy camper:The Steelers defense put on a bit of a show at training camp on Sunday, winning two separate rounds of seven shots and just overall coming out with a lot of energy.
But despite the performance, linebacker Patrick Queen wasn't excited.
Actually, he was kind of miffed at himself.
"Yeah, I'm kind of (ticked) off right now because I didn't have the best practice," said Queen. "It wasn't a bad practice, but it wasn't the best either. You want to be consistent. It's a constant grind across the battle every single day to try to get one percent better. So that's got me a little ticked. But I know the offense has got good players and it's not going to be given to me.
"So, I've got to go out here and grind every single day and get better."
To those watching, Queen's performance looked strong in the practice.
But for him, it's a different standard.
"I think it's just me," said Queen. "It's just a whole bunch of stuff that goes into it. That my brain is always thinking, never stop thinking. I want to be great. It (ticks) me off, and that's what it is."
It's nothing major that had Queen feeling the way he did, just some minor things that he knows he could have done better.
"Just some run plays, I think I could shoot a little bit faster," said Queen. "I'm getting back there, just maybe a step here or there that I could get around and get back in the backfield quicker.
"Nothing crazy, just small stuff."
It's a process:The Steelers will embark on their third week of training camp practice on Tuesday with the same mindset, but something different in sight at the end of the week.
The preseason begins this week for the team, taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road on Saturday at 7 p.m.
It will be an opportunity for young players and those new to the Steelers to show what they are capable of, with in-game performance getting a different evaluation from the coaching staff than what takes place on the practice field daily.
"As we lean in on next week and get ready to step into a stadium, we're going to need everyone," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "Everyone's going to need an opportunity to show what they're capable of. And certainly, we weigh in-stadium performance a little heavier than some of the stuff that we see out here. And so, I'm excited about some of that."
Tomlin has liked what he has seen the last few days in training camp, seeing the work they have put on the field coming together.
"It's a process," said Tomlin. "That's why we come to locations like this. Physical repetition required, not only in terms of developed individual skill, but collective cohesion.
"The second weekend, you're starting to feel some of those things, and when you do, that's when you get an opportunity to see the talent. Let the talent be the deciding factor, and that's what we aspire to."
One player Tomlin is well aware of the talent is quarterback Mason Rudolph. Rudolph was signed in the offseason, returning to the team where he spent the first six years of his career.
It's not just what he brings to the field, but his approach in a backup role to quarterback Aaron Rodgers that Tomlin appreciates.
"Mason's been a team player," said Tomlin. "We're familiar with him. This is his second time here. He's always a hand in the pile guy. He is always working to compete and get better as well.
"So, I appreciate his ability to balance those things."
Rush to judgment:The Steelers have long been a team that valued the ability to pressure passers with a four-man rush. But with the personnel changes that have been made on defense blitzing more often might wind up being an attractive option.
"I think we have a lot of guys who are capable on our defense to blitz," said linebacker Alex Highsmith, who left practice on Sunday early with what Coach Mike Tomlin described as possibly his groin. "Day by day we're getting better at that. Ultimately, the best blitzing defenses are good at timing the blitzes. We have a lot of guys on the back end who are good blitzers.
"We're 'Blitzburgh' for a reason so we have a lot of blitz packages. I'm excited to see how we bring them out."
Cornerback Jalen Ramsey is one such player on the back end. Ramsey has played a lot of "nickel" cornerback thus far in
camp and had been noticeable blitzing from the slot.
"It's been cool, especially seeing him be here, he's playing everywhere on the field," Highsmith said. "He's been one of the best in the game for a while. It's just awesome to see how he's moving around and how versatile he is.
"Excited to see what he adds to our defense."
Other potential changes involve the outside linebackers switching sides (T.J. Watt has traditionally rushed from the left side of the defensive formation and Highsmith from the right) and players rushing from non-traditional gaps (Highsmith or Watt up the middle or inside linebacker Payton Wilson coming off the edge).
The Steelers are working on "being comfortable being uncomfortable," Highsmith said, as they dabble with such tweaks to the scheme.
Pressure can also often prove to be a viable alternative to actually getting the quarterback on the ground. The defensive front has made a habit of getting hands up and batting passes in camp.
"Trying to get your hands up is important," Highsmith said. "With the rules and everything, I know we can't hit the quarterback like we used to. There's just a continued emphasis on ball searching, just getting the ball out, really, because you can't hit 'em high, can't hit 'em low, can't slam them so you just gotta get the ball out."
Highsmith also had high praise for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and how working against him in practice is improving the defense.
"It's been cool," Highsmith said. "He definitely challenges us. I think he has one of the best hard counts in the league, he's got a couple guys to jump.
"He's definitely challenging us. He's making us better. He's doing quick snaps and stuff like that, too. Iron sharpens iron. It's been cool to see him continue to get better and better."

A great resource:The Steelers signed quarterback Mason Rudolph to a two-year contract this offseason, bringing him back to the Steelers after a year with the Tennessee Titans.
Rudolph was drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, spending his first six seasons in Pittsburgh before signing with the Titans.
Rudolph has appeared in 29 career games, with 18 starts. He has completed 437 of 686 passes, 63.7%, for 4,615 yards and 28 touchdowns.
In 2024 he appeared in eight games for the Titans, starting five. He completed 146 of 228 passes, 64%, for 1,530 yards and nine touchdowns in his one season in Tennessee.
With the Steelers, he started 13 of 21 games he appeared in, completing 291 of 458 passes, 63.5%, for 3,085 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Being back in Pittsburgh is something Rudolph welcomes, feeling right at home.
"It feels like home," said Rudolph. "I've spent a lot of summers here and I'm comfortable. It's just good to be back with so many good friends and a coaching staff that I know very well, and some new faces that I've really enjoyed meeting."
Rudolph has shown a willingness to do whatever has been asked of him since returning, especially after Aaron Rodgers was signed to be the starter in 2025.
What Rudolph is doing is taking advantage of every snap, including on Saturday when he handled the starting duties with Rodgers getting a day off.
"I thought we had a good day," said Rudolph. "Moved the ball, took care of the ball. I thought the guys came out with a lot of energy. Unbelievable crowd here today for a Saturday afternoon."
One of the things Rudolph is doing this camp is using Rodgers as a strong resource, someone he knows he can learn from as Rodgers brings a wealth of experience and knowledge.
"I'll have to temper my warmth because I had a buddy send me a video and said, bro, your eyes are glazing over talking about Aaron Rodgers, so relax, take it easy a little bit," joked Rudolph.
Then he went on.
"It's been great," said Rudolph. "He's been very helpful and just very friendly and open to questions, whether that be football or non-football, talking about his experiences over the years. So, I'm really enjoying it and trying to pick up anything I can from him.
"He's forgotten more football than most of us will ever know, so it's a great resource."
Running with it:Running back Kenneth Gainwell came to the Steelers this offseason with a good resume, coming off a Super Bowl season with the Philadelphia Eagles, giving him the knowledge of what needs to happen in the backfield to reach the promised land.
He has been sharing that insight in the running backs room, including with rookie Kaleb Johnson, the third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
"I love the way he's carrying himself right now," said Gainwell of Johnson. "He's doing a great job at that, and I think he just needs to continue to do his job each and every day. Come here and stay focused on the small details, but just not let the outside noise get to him, and just keep working.
"He's a rookie. He's got to continue learning each and every single day. He's got to just keep going."
Gainwell was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the 150th overall pick, and spent the last four seasons with the Eagles.
He has appeared in 66 games, including four starts, and carried the ball 280 times for 1,185 yards, a 4.2-yard average, and 12 touchdowns. Gainwell also has 102 receptions for 721 yards, a 7.1-yard average, and one touchdown. He also has 27 kickoff returns for 612 yards, a 22.7-yard average.
While he has the experience, football is all about learning, and while he is now teaching, he is also doing his share of learning. While with the Eagles he learned from Saquon Barkley. Now the Steelers, while doing his share of teaching he is also learning from others.
"Being behind (Saquon), learning a lot from him, off the field things and what I need to be doing in the backfield, or protection, eyes, my feet. He's just a great role model at that.
"And here, it's just the same thing. I'm trying to bring that same energy here, and with the guys we have in the room, Jaylen (Warren) is a great example of that. I'm just continuing to learn from all the guys and just bring the same energy."
Back with this family:It was impossible to hide the smile on defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko's face on Saturday because he was happy as can be to be back home.
The Steelers signed Fehoko on Saturday morning, while placing fellow defensive lineman Dean Lowry on the Reserve/Injured List.
Fehoko originally signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2023 season, following three seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Fehoko started the 2023 season on the Steelers practice squad but was promoted to the 53-man roster in season. He was later released from the 53-man roster and signed back to the practice squad. He also spent part of the 2024 season on the team's practice squad.
"It feels great to be back," said Fehoko. "It's like a second home and it just feels great being around the guys. They introduced me in meetings today and everybody booed me. So, you know you're back then, but it's great. It's all in good pleasure."
Fehoko said he had some other options with teams, but the fit wasn't right. With the Steelers, it's just right.
"It's the culture," said Fehoko. "I had a few calls when I was at home to go to other places. This is home to me. Knowing the coaches, knowing the players, everybody here. I love being here. Everybody greeted me with open arms today like I've been here all year. So, it's good. I'm happy to be back. It means a lot.
"It's great being around the guys, the camaraderie. Believe it or not, you kind of miss Latrobe a little bit when you're at home changing diapers and stuff, doing Target runs with the wife. You get a call to go to Latrobe, and you are on that plane.
"I love being here, just the environment, being around the fans again. You kind of miss football a lot, so you appreciate it being back."
The culture that Fehoko references is one that has him on Cloud 9 right now being back with the team.
"Shoot, what isn't about the culture here," said Fehoko. "They have everything here. I'm not shy about when I talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers in public. I'm never shy about it. This place has treated me well. They welcome me with open arms every time I've signed back. And just the culture Coach (Mike) Tomlin's built here, with the front office and what they have here and what they're building.
"It's great. It's something I want to be a part of and that's the only reason I got up off the couch to come back and play for Steelers."
While he is happy to be back, Fehoko wasn't signed just for the family reunion.
He is there for a mission.
"I bring versatility, playing along all three spots on the defensive line in both end positions and nose tackle," said Fehoko. "In the first walk-through, I didn't come out, I knew all the reps. A lot of these guys have taken a lot of the reps in camp. So, it's good for me to provide those fresh legs."
Family ties:The Bruener family has been well-represented at training camp, with rookie linebacker Carson Bruener, his dad and Steelers scout Mark Bruener, and his younger brother, ballboy Hudson Bruener, all on hand.
But there is one Bruener everyone has their eye on in camp, and that is Carson, the seventh round pick out of the University of Washington.
"It's been awesome. It's awesome," said Bruener of the first few weeks of camp. "A dream come true. I mean, it's fun just being out here, being able to play football again."
After going through OTAs and minicamp, training camp has taken in to the next level for Bruener, and he definitely sees the progress he is making, especially on the mental side of things.
"I feel like my understanding of the playbook. I feel like I'm going out there and it's not like, all right, this is my job and that's all I'm thinking about. I feel I'm out there just playing football at this point, kind of know where I need to be, knowing my reads and my keys.
"Once you get pads on, things go a little bit faster. Now you're hitting people, you're having to go and tackle, so having that first part, that mental part down, it just allows you to go out there and play free."
Bruener said he was mentally ready to put the pads on for the first time on Tuesday, but Mother Nature had other plans, raining out the practice and moving things inside.
But finally getting there on Wednesday was what he had been waiting for since his last college game.
"Before the pads came on, we've been having football-like drills, like Coach (Mike) Tomlin always says. But now we actually get to go play football, because football is played with pads on."
And there definitely have been some people keeping a close eye on him, with dad and brother watching with the pads on. While they are watching closely, they are also allowing him to be his own man.
"Having them here, it's those familiar faces," said Bruener. Having family here just kind of makes it a more comfortable feeling, especially in camp. Once you get to the dog days, it is definitely nice having them.
"My dad's actually let me do my own thing. He talked to me about backs-on-backers. He told me it's going to be hot, make sure you're hydrated. Just little things like that, stuff I already know.
"He's also he's also allowing me to go out there and just be me. He's not hovering over me, trying to tell me what to do on every single move. He's never been that way, and I appreciate that."
A night to remember:His introduction to "Friday Night Lights" was such that wide receiver DK Metcalf wanted to think for a minute before finding the right words to accurately sum up his initial such experience.
"How can I put this it was fun," Metcalf said.
It was much more than that, actually.
And Metcalf was more than happy to elaborate.
"This city really loves football and loves the Pittsburgh Steelers," he continued. "I thought it was just really cool to see that many people out there at a high school stadium taking in the environment, taking in the sights.
"I just thought it was a great experience, not only for the community but for me since it was my first time being here. It was just real cool from my point of view."
The announced attendance was 13,653 on Friday night at Latrobe's Memorial Stadium.
Those that stuck around until the end, and there were many, saw the first-team offense fail to complete a pass or register a first down in the first two-minute drill of training camp.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was unable to connect with tight end Pat Freiermuth and had two passes deflected at the line of scrimmage.
There were also two penalties assessed by the crew of five NFL officials working the practice (one against the offense and one against the defense, both of the 5-yard variety).
That left the offense facing a fourth-and-10 from the 47-yard line and still 53 yards away from completing its assigned task of driving for a touchdown in less than 1:39 with one timeout at its disposal.
Rodgers eventually found Metcalf open down the left sideline but the pass glanced off Metcalf's fingertips and fell incomplete.
"It was close," Metcalf acknowledged. "But if it hit my fingers, I gotta catch it. We gotta keep the drive alive and not shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties."

Rodgers leadership shines:It hasn't taken long for quarterback Aaron Rodgers to develop a strong bond with his teammates, from rookies to veterans, he is a player who treats them all the same.
And his teammates are singing his praises for his approach.
"I never met him before (he came here)," said second year receiver Roman Wilson. "When I met him, he was a cool dude. I tell everyone, my family, he is the coolest guy I have ever met. He is truly one of a kind. Everybody loves him.
"Just being able to talk to him. He has a lot of wisdom. He has so much experience. He treats us like friends off the field and gives us a lot of advice. He is a great dude.
"I appreciate him taking my game to another level. He is a Hall of Famer one day. So smart. I love to be able to learn from him and elevate my game."
Rodgers has been spending a lot of time getting to know all of his teammates, but there is no doubt he is creating a very strong bond with those on offense who he will be going to battle with.
"I'll just say he's another coach on the field," said tight end Jonnu Smith. "The way he sees things, you can be very comfortable with Aaron operating the offense. Obviously, he's going to be one of the greatest to ever do it at his position.
"Understanding that this is his last year, you want to go out there and be successful for him. You want to compete for him. He's a great teammate, great leader, great quarterback. Glad he's on our team."
Rodgers has been putting in his time learning the Steelers offense along with many of his new teammates, taking a new journey himself in his 21st season. And he is picking it up in rapid fire speed.
"You can see why he's a four-time NFL MVP and why he has had the career and success he's had," said tight end Pat Freiermuth. "He puts in a lot of work, he's very attentive to the details.
"That's the biggest thing that I've seen is just his attention to detail of the offense. You've got to make sure your splits are right. You've got to make sure you're running the right route in certain depths and stuff like that. He holds everyone accountable. And the coolest thing is if he feels like he messed up a play, he'll take accountability and not throw other people under the bus.
"He's a great leader and a great guy in the offense."
Words of wisdom:If you are a young player on the Steelers defense, one of the staples to go to for advice is linebacker Alex Highsmith.
In his sixth season, Highsmith is someone who not only understands the game, but also understands what it takes to keep doing it day in and day out at a high level.
With the players putting the pads on for the first time on Wednesday, Highsmith wasn't shy about sharing some tips of the trade throughout the week.
"It's about making the most of every rep," said Highsmith. "These padded practices get a lot more intense. You've got to bring that intensity from the jump, don't warm up to it and just get started early. Get in there, make some plays early, and then I think it sets the tone for the day."
One thing Highsmith likes about the Steelers rookie class is they brought intensity with them from college, not needing to be pushed, but doing some pushing of their own.
"I think we have a lot of young guys that are going to be able to contribute for us on the defensive side of the ball with Derrick (Harmon) and Jack (Sawyer). Seeing those guys in my room, it's been so cool. Both of them are mature for their age and so they've been working hard. I'm excited to see what they do in camp in pads."
Back at familiar territory:Receiver Ben Skowronek is no stranger to coming to Saint Vincent College for Steelers training camp.
It's something he did with his grandfather as a kid, growing up in nearby Connellsville, Pa., where it was just a short ride to check out the black and gold in action.
"It's God's country," said Skowronek. "It's beautiful out here. Not too far from where my Pops is from.
"I actually came out here (as a kid). It was when 'The Bus' (Jerome Bettis) was still playing, so that was a long time ago. I was a kid, I hardly remember it, but came out here with my grandpa. So that's one of the memories I have with him, sitting on that hill watching practice."
Skowronek is enjoying the camp atmosphere and expects to have some visitors from his father's side at camp.
"It's great, man, it is football, you get away from distractions," said Skowronek. "I miss my wife, she won't be coming out here, but I'll have family, aunts, uncles, cousins. The Skowronek side, will probably be out in Latrobe at some point."

Friday, August 1
Turning on the lights:It's a yearly tradition. A tradition held close to the hearts of those who wear black and gold. It's something that has been going on for Steelers players throughout the years.
Friday Night Lights.
The Steelers will hop on school buses on Friday evening and head to Latrobe Memorial Stadium for the annual Friday Night Lights practice.
It has become a tradition that players love and look forward to every year, a change of scenery from the normal schedule and an enthusiastic crowd that energizes them.
"It's all about the atmosphere," said linebacker Alex Highsmith. "All the fans that come out make it so special. It's just a really unique thing that we do, and other teams don't do.
"The yellow school buses really give it that high school feel. Playing in a high school stadium with the fans, the stands full of fans all around the bleachers is just such a cool feeling.
"I think it's just so cool to be a part of it every single year. It just feels like a game out there. Every single rep, every single play, feels like a game. The atmosphere is probably my favorite part."
Tight end Pat Freiermuth has been a part of his fair share of Friday Night Lights practices with the Steelers and he enjoys it every time.
"It's awesome," said Freiermuth. "I love Friday Night Lights. It's something I look forward to every camp. Having all of the fans there, and it's cool to go back and practice at a high school stadium again and get that type of atmosphere, like you're gearing up for Friday night lights back in high school.
"It's fun to see all the school buses and get on there. It brings you back to high school days.
"And the support from the fans is amazing. We come here every camp, and you can tell the whole community looks forward to this. They get excited that we're here, and we want to have a good performance for them."
The love and support from the Latrobe community is something that shines all through training camp, but really comes into play for Friday Night Lights, as neighbors stand on their front porches waving Terrible Towels as the buses drive by.
"It has that exciting high school feeling," said receiver Calvin Austin III. "We drive up in the buses and see the big crowd, it gives you that high school feel. At my high school, we never really had crowds as big as what comes out for this. Being in the high school environment and just seeing how many fans come out, it feels like the whole community is here.
"It's cool to see when a guy who just joined the team, and you tell him about it, and their reaction. High school football was some of the best times of your life. You don't even realize it then, but when you look back on it, you know it. So, getting that feeling back for a little moment is cool."
One of those new players is receiver DK Metcalf, who in his six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks didn't experience anything like Friday Night Lights.
"I'm looking forward to it, it's going to very new to me, so I don't know how to take that experience," said Metcalf. "Just looking forward to it, looking forward these days at training camp and just chillin' around the guys."
Metcalf said there were fans at camp when he played for the Seahawks, but nothing to the extent he has seen with the Steelers.
"This is another level than what I'm used to from Seattle," said Metcalf. "It just shows the tradition that this organization has and how many loyal fans they have around the world who are able to show up in Latrobe, Pennsylvania on a hot day. It shows the lineage this organization has, and how the fans are so loyal to them."
Getting chippy:The Steelers have had the pads on at Saint Vincent College.
The weather has been steamy the first few weeks.
And now things are heating up on the field, with practices getting a little chippy.
And safety Chuck Clark wouldn't have it any other way.
"I like it," said Clark. "It's training camp.
"I love it. To me, it is what it is. It's football. Football, whatever happens in football, happens. It's what it is.
"It's the nature of the game. It's a rough game. You put a bunch of A-type personalities in a space and say go be competitive, go be physical, stuff is going to happen."
Clark, who is in his ninth season in the NFL, spent his first six seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and the last two with the New York Jets.
He has appeared in 108 career games, starting 75 of them, and has recorded 429 tackles, 260 of them solo stops, nine tackles for a loss, and five interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. He also has 34 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
"In this system, I'm just playing football, learning as much as I can and doing whatever I can," said Clark. "I don't feel I'm going to limit myself to one thing. I know I can do both things, the more that I can do. I know that I could play different positions as well. If it comes down to nickel, whatever it be, I mean that I've done that versatility as well. I'm ready for whatever comes my way.
"That's just the nature of the game, being able to do multiple things."
Clark has missed time with injuries, including the 2023 season with a torn ACL, and any time he gets on the field, at any position, he is loving it.
"I look forward to all the practices," said Clark. "Any time I get to step on the field, having missed a year before with injury, I look forward to all the practices. All the times I can lace up my pads, lace up my cleats and get out there, I look forward to everything."
No hard feelings:The two scraps that broke out between tight end Jonnu Smith and safety Juan Thornhill following successive reps in a 1-on-1 pass route/pass coverage drill Thursday morning's practice resulted more from competitive spirit than a shared history, Smith insisted.
"No, I don't have history with No. 22," Smith maintained. "We're just out here at training camp competing, trying to get better, that's it. When you're a competitor, that competitive spirit comes out in different ways."
The way it came out initially resulted in Smith throwing the ball at Thornhill after beating Thornhill for a completion. Nothing egregious had happened on the rep, Smith confirmed.
"That's just how I was feeling at the time," he said.
Thornhill took offense and the two scraped briefly. The next time they were matched up in the drill an overthrow resulted in an incompletion.
Thornhill responded by collecting the ball, shoving it in Smith's gut and then shoving Smith. Thornhill took offense and the two scraped briefly.
"It's extremely fun," Smith insisted. "You know, when it gets kinda quiet you gotta wake the stands up a little bit. It's training camp, we're out here competing and having a good time, having fun. That's all it's about.
"We're teammates. We've got no personal beef or anything like that. We're out here having fun. It gets competitive. We've been doping this for a long time and we want to win (individual reps) and it just brings certain characteristics out in us.
"We understand we can't take this to Sunday (regular-season games) so we let it out here in training camp."
Another aspect of camp Smith has been enjoying is playing in an offense quarterbacked by Aaron Rodgers.
"He's another coach on the field," Smith assessed. "The way he sees things, we've been very comfortable with Aaron operating the offense. Obviously, he's going be one of the greatest to do it at his position, so it's an honor. And understanding this is his last year, you want to go out there, you want to be successful for him, you want to compete for him.
"He's a great teammate. I don't know how things have been portrayed in the past or whatever, however it's portrayed in the media but that guy is a great teammate, a great leader. I'm glad he's on our team."

Nothing changes:Chris Boswell is coming off his first All-Pro season, but that doesn't mean anything has changed for him as he prepares for the 2025 season.
Except for one thing, that is.
Boswell is now a father of two, as his wife, Havana gave birth to son, Beckham, this offseason. Boswell said she is holding down the fort, taking care of sons Beckham and Channing while he is at training camp.
"Shout out to my wife, taking care of him for the last couple weeks, me being up here," said Boswell. "It's definitely a big learning curve. They're very rewarding, so I'm enjoying it.
"It's definitely a different perspective. Family matters more now than ever. Football is not who I am as a person anymore. It's just kind of my job and I take it from that perspective."
While it's a job now more than an identity, it's a job he does like no other in the NFL.
Boswell has been a mainstay for the Steelers kicking game since he was signed as a free agent a month into the 2015 season.
In his first 10 seasons, Boswell has connected on 272 of 309 field goal attempts (88%), which ranks second in NFL history with at least 300 field goal attempts since 2015, and 311 of 326 extra point attempts (95.4%). In 150 games played, he has accounted for 1,127 career points, which ranks second in franchise history.
Boswell, who is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, was named first-team Associated Press All-Pro for the first time in his career. He was also selected to the NFLPA Players' All-Pro team, Sporting News All-Pro, Pro Football Focus All-Pro, the Pro Bowl Games, and Pro Football Writers of America All-NFL and All-AFC teams.
He connected on an NFL high 41 of 44 field goal attempts last season (93.2%). He was also perfect on 35 extra point attempts. He made 13 field goals of 50 or more yards this last season and also led the NFL in points by a kicker (158) and field goal percentage (93.2, min. 35 FGA), and ranked second in field goals attempted (44) in 2024.
Boswell set a Steelers record for 41 field goals made in 2024, which were the most by a kicker in the NFL since David Akers in 2011 (44) and second-most by a kicker since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Boswell also set a Steelers record for most points by a kicker with 158, which was tied for the fifth-most by a kicker since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
But if you ask him, it was business as usual.
"It's just a year where you kick more field goals than other years," said Boswell as matter of fact as you can. "Nothing changes."
And what about being named All-Pro a year ago.
"I don't pay too much attention to it," said Boswell. "Last year pays no advance into this year. You've got to work for it every year. Last year was last year, so I've just got to get better this year.
"I don't remember much of last year. It's kick by kick. I make it, I move on. I miss it, and I move on. I pay no attention to the last kick. If I'm paying more attention to the last kick, it affects the kick coming up. So, it's a new mentality, new kick every time."
Boswell said he wants to improve on his 2024, which with the year he had last year, it's a high expectation.
But he just rolls with it.
"I just go with the flow," said Boswell. "Of course you have high expectations for yourself, but we'll just see what happens for the season."
Bringing his energy:Saint Vincent College was buzzing on Wednesday when The Pat McAfee Show took over the campus for a live broadcast on ESPN.
Steelers fans showed up in huge numbers, chanting Here We Go Steelers and singing Renegade, and were treated to McAfee in his element.
"Welcome to Saint Vincent College," said McAfee. "This lovely place they have called home since 1966. This beautiful Catholic college has been the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp. Every Pittsburgh Steelers that has just crossed your mind has worked their (tail) off on the fields behind us here today.
"Just like this team that has been reimagined in a brand new way to put a press for a Super Bowl. The boys are buzzing. The city is electrifying. And this is one of those things that if you're a football fan, you have to experience.
"The lines to get into this training camp every single day are hours and hours long. Yinzers travel from all over the country to come watch the boys put in work here at Saint Vincent College. And if you think about Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh is a hardworking city. You think about Western Pennsylvania, you think about dawgs. That is what training camp is all about.
"I think we'll have a show that will be able to showcase one of the greatest football towns in the history of this sport for a few hours before they kick off their first full padded practice here in Saint Vincent College."
McAfee had a full lineup that included Coach Mike Tomlin, General Manager Omar Khan, special teams coordinator Danny Smith, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, defensive tackle Cameron Heyward and linebacker T.J. Watt.
Each one gave McAfee a little unique insight into their lives at camp, and Rodgers shared his relationship with Tomlin, a relationship that brought him to the Steelers.
"Mike T is the man," said Rodgers. "Any hate, disrespect and the ilk is complete and utter bull. Mike T. Is the man. From day one that we talked on the phone in the offseason, I was never talking to a head coach. I was talking to a friend. I respected the heck out of that. I have crazy respect for him, the way that he leads the room. The way he talks in the team meeting, the way he is in practice. The surprise has been just what a great dude he is. What a great leader he is, on top of what I already expected, which was already high based on what I thought from afar.
"But being able to see it in person is incredible. He's the type of guy that every great coach makes you want to play for him. And what I mean to expand on that is you care so deeply about the person, you don't want to let him down. And that's the aura and that's the respect that Mike has from his players. You want to play for this guy because you know how much he cares, and you don't want to let him down."
Familiar faces:One Steelers staff member recently joked that he felt like the team was turning back the clock, looking out on the field and seeing a collection of former Steelers who played for the Steelers from around 2005-2009.
And he wasn't wrong.
Among those players was former offensive lineman Willie Colon, a member of the Steelers Super Bowl XLIII championship team.
Colon is spending time working with the Steelers player personnel department during training camp, getting a feel for what the department is all about.
"I'm out here working with the scouting department, just really learning the nuances, trying to see how to make the sauce, if you will," said Colon. "It's been great. I'm just happy Omar (Khan) and Coach (Mike) Tomlin allowed me aboard and allowed me behind the curtain a little bit. It's great.
"The ultimate goal is obviously to be able to get in the mind of the players, see the makeup, and understand how the man's made underneath the helmet. That's always important, and being able to do that always helps, especially when we kind of grow into the business."
Colon, who played for the Steelers from 2006-2012, has enjoyed the time at camp, even having an opportunity to connect with some old friends.
"It's been awesome being with Ike (Taylor), Troy (Polamalu) and seeing Peezy (Joey Porter) and all these guys," said Colon. "It just brings back so many memories. It's a blessing how it is a family atmosphere.
"Being able to have access to these guys and be able to talk to them and kind of go down memory lane, which we all do is special. We had so many great years, it just warms my heart, so it feels good."
Being back in a training camp atmosphere is a bit unusual for Colon, but something he has welcomed with open arms as it brings back some of those great memories.
"This is the place where you used to grit and grind together," said Colon. "This is where the brotherhood and the bond forms. The next man knows what you're going through. So, it's refreshing.
"And then seeing the fans is awesome. There's nothing like Steelers Nation pulling up and supporting the boys."
With so many teams holding their training camps at their own facilities, Colon likes the escape that Saint Vincent College provides.
"I think it just speaks to the culture," said Colon. "It speaks to the organization and the family. They understand that the gold is here. You can do a lot of other things when it comes to training camp. You see other teams and organizations trying to revamp it, but this is where the sauce is made, so to speak, and keeping that tradition alive.
"We have the oral history, so we get to pass it down to these guys and talk about how much camp means and how much the fans mean and what it means to be a Steeler all starts here."

Settled in:Veteran receiver Robert Woods has played with his share of quarterbacks during his 12-year NFL career, and he has settled right in with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
"It's been easy," said Woods. "He's putting the ball in catchable positions, leading our meetings. He's been a great leader and communicating with guys in the huddle, off the huddle."
Woods brings plenty of experience with him to the receiver room, having appeared in 171 games, with 145 starts. He has 683 receptions for 8,233 yards, a 12.1-yard average, and 38 touchdowns. He also has 75 rushing attempts for 514 yards and five touchdowns.
Woods is the fourth active player in the NFL with at least 7,500 career receiving yards to catch a touchdown pass with at least four different teams.
Woods spent the last two seasons (2023-24) with the Houston Texans, appearing in 29 games, with 15 starts. He had 60 receptions for 629 yards, a 10.5-yard average, and one touchdown.
With that experience comes something like putting on the pads for the first time something that is old hat and doesn't change how he approaches things.
"It's the same thing I've been doing these past few days, just trying to get open and then get the ball in my hands," said Woods. "I feel like nothing changes for me.
"Obviously, we're playing physical, using our hands, but the pads don't change anything for me.
"I'm just trying to get open, get the ball. That's football. We'll hit when that comes."
He already has a strong appreciation for the Steelers offense and what offensive coordinator Arthur Smith runs. He also is a fan of how the personnel fit into it.
"I like how Art is calling the plays and how it's schemed up right now, trying to expose the defense and finding gaps and making guys make decisions," said Woods. "We have a quarterback who is pulling the trigger and making guys make the decisions.
"You see in our meeting room, and out here on the field, guys are paying attention to the details. That's the key to being a high-powered offense is paying attention to details. Obviously, everybody knows X's and O's and routes. But when you focus on the small things, big plays happen."
In addition to what he brings to the offense, he also has the added dimension as a punt returner, giving special teams coordinator Danny Smith another weapon.
"I've been catching punts the past few years now," said Woods. "Just being consistent with it, still just trying to keep my hands on the ball and putting our offense in a good field position."
Putting on the pads:Steelers players were pumped to put on the pads on Tuesday, but Mother Nature had other plans, forcing practice inside the gym at Saint Vincent College and delaying the action for one day.
But it will be worth the wait as the players will take the field in pads today for the first time since the 2024 season ended, taking things to the next level.
"That's when the real football starts," said linebacker Nick Herbig. "All this stuff is fun, being out there with the guys and just getting your feet back under you. But everybody knows that football starts when the pads come on."
Defensive tackle Isaiahh Loudermilk's eyes lit up at the mere mention of putting on the pads, knowing the battle in the trenches is what football is all about.
"This is when everything you did in the offseason, OTAs, minicamp and the first week of this camp comes together, when you can actually go out and play real football," said Loudermilk. "Football's a physical sport, and up until now it's physical, but it's not as real as a real football game. So, putting the pads on, you get an idea of where everyone's at now.
"Everyone is coming out and being physical. And you know once the pads come on, the energy goes way up. People are flying around having fun. I know everyone's pumped up."
Veteran cornerback Darius Slay, who is in his 13th season in the NFL, likes the energy the pads bring.
"I love the pads," said Slay. "It the competitive aspect. The intensity of practice goes up. You can make a little contact. It's a contact sport. That's what we signed up for and we're looking forward to getting in the pads."
And while players like Slay are accustomed to the first day in pads, he knows it will be a good opportunity for younger players who are still getting their feet wet.
"Definitely for the younger guys, their first time getting in the league," said Slay. "This is my 13th camp, so I've been doing this for a long time.
"It's always a good feeling because that means football is truly back, so I look forward to it."
One young player who is anxious to put those pads on is linebacker Jack Sawyer, the fourth round pick out of Ohio State.
"I'm really looking forward to that," said Sawyer. "That's real football. Our job is to play real football, so I'm excited to put the pads on and get after it."
Great expectations:Malik Harrison suspects fellow inside linebacker and second-year pro Payton Wilson is already "one of the best coverage linebackers in the league," and expects Wilson's game to "skyrocket" this season.
Wilson isn't about to back down from matching such a high standard.
"I 100-percent agree with him," Wilson maintained. "These guys that are in our room, we have so much talent in our room between me, 'P.Q' (Patrick Queen), Malik, Cole (Holcomb), 'Mark-Rob' (Mark Robinson), all those guys. It's just awesome to go out there with those guys every day.
"The whole room's gonna have a heck of a year and I'm just excited to get out there with each and every one of them."
Harrison said he arrived at his assessment after observing Wilson in OTAs. The biggest difference for Wilson this season is "just confidence.
"Just being able to give guys like (defensive tackle) Cam Heyward and (outside linebacker) T.J. Watt a call without kind of hesitating, and being like 'oh, if I give them the wrong call,' and this and that," Wilson continued. "Knowing the defense like the back of my hand and getting back to just playing the game, rather than thinking the whole time, worrying about making a mistake.
"Now it's just about making the plays and making the big plays rather than worrying about being wrong."
That's a confidence Wilson gleaned as last season progressed, "when I started playing a lot towards the end of the year, those last few games.
"The confidence just comes with reps. And then this year, being beside 'P.Q.' the whole time and learning from him, learning from those guys in there has really helped me a lot."
Queen played 100 percent of the defensive snaps last season, all 1,090 of them. That's another standard Wilson aspires to match.
"That's my goal," he announced. "I want to be out there with him every single snap. It was kind of cool to see after the games how dog tired he was and how much he put on the line for the team.
"I just want to be able to do the same thing. When I walk off that field, I want to be able to say that I gave everything that I completely had, that the coaches trusted me fully and I played the whole game."

Putting on the pads:The temperature is going to be hot in Latrobe today, with it expected to be in the mid-90s in the afternoon with the heat index near 100.
But there is one thing that is going to be hotter.
The action on the field.
The Steelers will put the pads on for the first time since the 2024 season ended, taking things to the next level.

"I'm really looking forward to that," said Sawyer. "That's real football. Our job is to play real football, so I'm excited to put the pads on and get after it."
Let the competition begin:One of the highlights of the pads going on is the backs-on-backers drills, when the running backs and linebackers take each other on in one of the most heated and anticipated drills of training camp.
"I love it. You've got to love it," said linebacker Nick Herbig. "It's the competition and atmosphere it brings. It's what Coach (Mike) Tomlin tries to develop in this program, and that's the culture we have.
"We're going to compete every single day, every single rep, but at the end of the day, we're brothers. We're going to eat dinner together. We're going to stick together."
Rookie linebacker Jack Sawyer is ready to experience his first Steelers backs-on-backers drill, having already seen videos of past ones.
"I'm looking forward to it," said Sawyer. "It looks like it gets intense, the way it should be. Anybody can get better when it's intense. It's a drill where it's man-on-man, so I'm looking forward to that."
Sawyer, who is known for his intensity and hard-hitting, thrives on the idea of things getting physical.
"I think it's a different feel whenever you've got the pads on," said Sawyer. "You're going full tilt. It brings the best out of guys, and it really brings that competitive edge out of everybody.
"You know at that point, it's man-on-man. It's real football. You're hitting, you've got the pads on and you're playing. That in itself is naturally what would bring the best out of the guys and that competitive edge, so I'm looking forward to all of it."
Not backing down:While putting the pads on is something special for the defense, don't think for a minute the running backs aren't looking forward to backs-on-backers and getting their shot.
"I've heard it's a big thing and I'm working every day to get better and get to that role so they can trust me to be reliable," said rookie Kaleb Johnson. "(Pass protection) is the main thing I'm focusing on right now. Everything else falls into place, but that's my main thing, pass protection, working on it every day."
Johnson said there isn't a particular linebacker he is looking forward to going against, just simply wanting to show what he is capable of against whoever he is pitted against.
"Everybody," said Johnson of who he wants to go against. "Whoever they put in my face, I'm going to go."
Johnson said he knew about backs-on-backers from seeing videos on social media and it has him ready to go.
"That's the first thing I saw was Jaylen (Warren), taking one of the linebackers out and it was a hype. So, I really want to show people what I can do and show people that I've been working on pass protection and I'm really ready to get better every day. I'm just working every day to get better."
Warren has talked with Johnson about backs-on-backers, giving him his best advice of how to handle it.
"I'm not going to get into all the fundamentals (of what I told him), but I told him just do your thing," said Warren. "Obviously he's been working on the fundamentals, so I'm excited to see him."
Warren himself is ready for the drill as well.
"I'm excited," said Warren. "I love that."
And he added.
"When it goes my way."
But one thing for sure is he won't back down.
"We're looking forward to that drill," said Warren. "We're not staying back, hoping they don't come. We're waiting for that drill."
Steelers sign three:The Steelers made multiple roster moves on Tuesday, including signing three players.
The team signed defensive tackle Domenique Davis, tight end Kevin Foelsch and running back Lew Nichols.
Davis, who was released earlier this week, spent time on the Steelers practice squad during the 2024 season. Davis originally signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. He was out of the NFL for two seasons before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022. He spent time on the Bengals practice squad and active roster during the past two seasons. Davis played college football at North Carolina Charlotte where he appeared in 31 games. He finished with 123 tackles, 51 of them solo stops, 15 tackles for a loss and six sacks.
Foelsch has spent time with the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and most recently the Kansas City Chiefs, but has yet to see action in an NFL game. He played college football at Division II New Haven, where he had 16 touchdown receptions.
Nichols was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, spending most of the season on the Reserve/Injured List. He has since spent time on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad. Nichols played college football at Central Michigan where he rushed for 1,710 yards in 2021, leading the nation. He was the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2021.
The team also terminated running back/kick returner Cordarrell Patterson, and waived/injured list receiver Montana Lemonious-Craig and linebacker Jeremiah Moon.

Motivation from within:It doesn't take a lot to motivate receiver Calvin Austin III.
As a matter of fact, he wakes up feeling that way.
Yes, there are things that push him, like the competition at receiver that is heating up in training camp.
But his motivation all comes from within.
"My motivation is just getting out of bed each day," said Austin. "Obviously, God gave me this gift, and so my motivation is being the best I can be. My motivation comes from doing things people said I wasn't going to do that I'm doing.
"So, my motivation is just waking up, it's just a part of me."
Austin knows there are high expectations for the offense this year, especially with the addition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receiver DK Metcalf.
But he is also a major part of those expectations, and he is ready to show it once again, playing always with a chip on his shoulder making sure those who didn't believe in the past, do now.
"Every time I step out on the field, what held me back in the past, in college and stuff, is who I am right now," said Austin. "Every time I step out on field, I've got something to prove.
"You've got to keep that (chip on your shoulder). This league is so competitive. You got guys fighting for your spot each and every day. At the end of the day it's just about you holding yourself up to your own standard that you set and not wavering from there."
In 2024, Austin played in 17 regular season games, starting eight. He had 36 receptions for 548 yards, a 15.2-yard average, and four touchdowns. He also returned 28 punts for 289 yards, a 10.3-yard average, and had a 73-yard touchdown return against the New York Giants.
While he is happy with that, he still has more he wants to do.
And it will never stop as being the best he can be is something he doesn't think truly ever happens.
"That's something that I'll probably never reach," said Austin. "If you reach the best that you can be, then you're probably getting complacent.
"So, the best I can be would be something I see when I retire."
Bring on the big guys:Tight end Jonnu Smith was excited to be on the field on Saturday for his first practice with the team, after missing the first few days with an injury that was day-to-day.
Smith said he has that 'training camp feel' being at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., something that benefits all of the players.
"This training camp, it's a true training camp," said Smith. "You get that feeling when you walk in. It's like this is the NFL. And that's good. It is good for the mind, good for the soul, and good for the body."
Smith, who was acquired by the Steelers via a trade with the Miami Dolphins in the weeks leading up to camp, is a big weapon for the offense at 6-3, 248 pounds. Combined with the rest of the tight end room it's going to give offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who Jonnu Smith played for in Atlanta, plenty of weapons.
"Everybody's got a different skill set, and so we're going to feed off each other," said Smith. "It's a unique skill set that each individual person in that room brings. As a collective, we can come together and see how we can put ourselves in the most advantageous position on Sundays. I think that's the fun part about it for Art, lining up in 12, 13, maybe even 14 personnel, all of these different ways that he can. Exploit the tight ends versatility and give us an advantage on Sunday.
"Nowadays, teams like to get away with playing a lot of sub and nickel defenses and think they can get away with having smaller, but faster guys on the field. And when we have big people, we've got to be able to expose that. We've got to be effective in a passing game and running game. We have the tools in our room to do that. It was just about going out and building that and working on that and continuing to establish that as our identity."
Jonnu Smith said he has familiarity with what Arthur Smith brings to the table, but there are also some new wrinkles.
"There's always a lot of evolution as the years go on," said Smith. "Look at things that you can get better at and work on, always looking to improve. Obviously, it's going to be some different terminology and some different concepts, but the foundation and the identity have been the same. So that's been a lot easier for me to grasp and get comfortable with, knowing what he wants to get accomplished."
Learning from the best: Quarterback Will Howard knows how fortunate he is to have landed where he did, and be in the position he is in.
Howard, the rookie sixth-round pick from Ohio State, is learning from one of the best in the game this year veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who already has 20 seasons under his belt.
"Every day it's a privilege," said Howard of learning from Rodgers. "He's a legend in the game, and getting to work with him, I've said it again and again, it's awesome. I'm humbled at the opportunity. I'm blessed to be here with him.
"He's just been so good to me and so willing to help me. And he doesn't have to do that. But for a guy in my shoes, and for him to be so willing to help me, I'm so thankful for that and so thankful for him.
"I'm just excited to continue to learn. I haven't been around him much, but I've got a whole year to learn from him, and we've got a lot of time left."
Howard has already seen progress he has personally made since the team broke minicamp over a month ago, adapting and learning the ins and outs of the NFL, some of that coming from what he has seen from Rodgers.
"I feel like I've just gotten more comfortable in the system and throwing the ball," said Howard. "I've continued over this offseason trying to change my body, slim some weight down. I feel like I'm at a good weight right now.
"I feel good with where I'm at and I feel I'm throwing the ball well. I'm excited to go out there and compete."
One of the biggest adjustments for young players isn't just the football side, but the mental side of the game. Howard agrees with that sentiment, and knows it's something he just continues to work on as he is learning everything in camp.
"I think that's really what separates people at this stage," said Howard of the mental aspect. "What I've seen is everybody's talented across the board. Everybody's talented, but the great ones and the ones that are exceptional, are different in the head and can process and do things up here (in their head) before they even do it out on the field.
"It's cool to just learn and see some of those guys like Aaron, just the way that his mind works and seeing how quickly he processes things and how much knowledge he has. I'm trying to soak up as much as I can and learn as much as I can because I want to do what he's done and play as long as he's played. I'm just trying to be a sponge right now and continue to work hard."
Coming from a program like Oho State, Howard is well aware of what traditions and strong fan bases are all about. He has embraced training camp at Saint Vincent College, going to a remote site while most teams in the NFL hold camp at their own practice facilities.
"There aren't a lot of NFL teams that still do camp at a destination," said Howard. "There were certain things that we did at Ohio State that were storied and tradition-oriented and you feel that a lot here too.
"The fan bases are very similar, super loyal, super passionate. It's really fun to be a part of and I'm just blessed to be here."
Same as he ever was:Safety Chuck Clark has joined the Steelers with 108 career-regular-season games and 75 career regular-season starts on his NFL resume, but also after having missed the 2023 season in its entirety and five games in 2024 due to injury.
The good news is Clark has declared himself back to his pre-2023 form from a health standpoint.
"Definitely," he maintained today. "I got hurt and that's part of the game. You play this game, things are gonna happen.
"You gotta take what comes in this game, the ups and downs. I feel like I bounced back well from that. That's history, that's the past."
Clark started 49 consecutive regular-season games for the Ravens from 2020 through 2022 and 12 for the Jets last season.
He's another new face in a secondary that lacks cohesion as a unit but not experience.
"We definitely have some veteran guys back there, a lot of guys that bring different traits and intangibles to the room," Clark observed. "I'm excited about it."
He acknowledged joining a team after a training camp has commenced is "a first for me."
But that said, Clark isn't anticipating a difficult transition to the Steelers.
"I know football, that's one thing for sure," he insisted. "It's just there's new terminology to it, picking up schemes and concepts. But I know football."

Loving life:The smile was impossible not to see as former Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel walked around the practice field at camp, hugging and sharing his same joy with coaches and players.
Keisel is one of the handful of Steelers legends who make their way to Saint Vincent College for Steelers training camp, catching up with everyone in the organization, and even taking time out for the fans.
"It's amazing to come back," said Keisel. "I mean, it's so nice to come out here and not have the anxiety that you used to have coming as a player. It's just crazy to think of all the great memories we had here with our teams, the team bonding that happens here in Latrobe is real."
The Steelers continue their tradition of hosting training camp at Saint Vincent College, something that brings back memories for Keisel as he agrees with Coach Mike Tomlin, who preaches it's the place where team bonding thrives.
"It's awesome to come here and encourage these guys to come together as a team and make a championship run," said Keisel. "We had so much fun here in Latrobe, seriously. Even just up behind the dorms, here at the pavilion, just getting together, playing cards. You're away from your family, you're away from everyone, you can totally focus on football.
"You work your tail off all summer to be in the best shape of your life. And now it's time to put that on display. This is where the magic happens here on this field in Latrobe."
Right as Keisel finished chatting Tomlin came over and the two shared a big bear hug, shining a light on what being a part of the Steelers family is all about.
"The brotherhood is real," said Keisel. "It's a family and that's probably what you miss the most when you're away from it is not seeing your family on a daily basis like you used to.
"We have a unique relationship when you step into the Pittsburgh Steelers organization where you become a part of the family and that lasts forever."
Iron sharpens iron:Safety Juan Thornhill admitted he was "surprised" quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw the pass that ended up being intercepted by inside linebacker Patrick Queen on the first 11-on-11 snap of training camp.
But for Thornhill, practicing against Rodgers has been invaluable in the early going at Saint Vincent College.
"It's amazing," Thornhill maintained. "Playing against one of the best each and every day is only going to make you better as a defense. If you're playing against a quarterback that doesn't have a lot of experience and things like that, it's pretty easy to read them and things like that, and you're not going to be prepared for the game.
"But when you have a guy like Aaron out here that's seen a lot of football, played in the biggest games, made a lot of big plays and you see him every single day it's just going to make the game easier."
Thornhill is, likewise, finding his Saint Vincent College experience appealing.
"It's nice, being able to get away, away from Pittsburgh, coming out here with our teammates, building that relationship," he said. "I think it's great.
"The environment is amazing. There are a lot of fans coming out here to support us. It's truly beautiful when you have fans like that behind you."
Thornhill's path to the Steelers' secondary has included stops in Kansas City, where he won two Super Bowls, and Cleveland, traditionally an arch rival of the Steelers.
"I'm on the better side now," he maintained. "I'm always where my feet are. I'm here. I'm not worried about anything in the past. My past is my past. I'm just focusing on the now."
The focus in the defensive secondary at present is to sort out roles for numerous position-flexible players, a group that grew via the acquisition of cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
Thornhill spent the bulk of his first practice at free safety but moved up into the box on occasion while Ramsey worked at safety and slot cornerback.
"We've got a lot of new pieces," Thornhill said. "We're all trying to figure it out, learn how to play together. We have guys that can play multiple positions. When you have guys like that, it's hard to figure out what's really going on. You have guys that can play nickel. You have guys that can play safety, at corner. Literally, you can mix and match everywhere.
"I think it's gonna make it a little more difficult for teams to figure out what we're doing."

Warren wouldn't change a thing: The Steelers running back room has a different look this year, with the addition of Kenneth Gainwell, the unrestricted free agent from the Eagles, and rookie Kaleb Johnson, the third round pick out of Iowa.
But there is a steady force in the room.
Jaylen Warren.
The former undrafted rookie has become a staple of the group, taking a route that wasn't always the easiest, but never faltering.
"It's surreal," said Warren. "I wouldn't change anything about it. I'm grateful for how it went with all the ups and downs because it got me where I am today.
"I look at it as just helping the team win."
While Warren is doing his part to help the team win, and looking to take control of the starting running back job, he isn't shying away from helping others, whether it's the veteran Gainwell or the rookie Johnson, adapt to their new team.
And Warren loves what he sees out of both of them so far.
"The best thing about (Kaleb) is his attitude," said Warren. "He comes in ready to work every day. Obviously, we've seen the skillset. He's got it all. But he's still looking for that winning edge to get better."
As far as Gainwell, who was a Super Bowl champion with the Eagles last year, Warren said he brings experience and so much more to the group.
"He's a veteran," said Warren. "He's a very detailed guy, and that's what I look up to a lot from him. He's been in every stage as far as winning the Super Bowl, so he knows what it takes. So, I kind of just watch him, watch how he goes around, ask him a couple questions, and I love the way he moves."
Familiar faces: Safety DeShon Elliott, in his second season with the Steelers, welcomed another former teammate to Saint Vincent College when safety Chuck Clark arrived at training camp.
Clark made it onto the field on Friday and practiced for the first time today.
Elliott led the reception committee for Clark, who played with Elliott from 2019-21 in Baltimore.
"Somebody who can just hop off the plane, come straight to practice yesterday, that was really cool," Elliott said of Clark.
Clark worked both safety positions, played some centerfield and also blitzed while participating in his first practice today.
"He's smart, he works hard, asks questions, fast, physical guy," Elliott reported. "I'm ready to see him play, honestly. I'm excited to have him here."
Clark started 75 of 108 career regular-season games played in the NFL, including 12 with the Jets last season. He missed 2023 due to a knee injury.
Cornerback Jalen Ramsey is also new to the Steelers but familiar to Elliott after the two spent the 2023 season together in Miami.
"Obviously, he fits a gold jacket playing nickel, safety, corner, dime," Elliott maintained. "Whatever you ask him to do, he can do it.
"He's extremely smart. You saw that pick today, made it look easy."
Ramsey's interception occurred on a pass from quarterback Aaron Rodgers that was intended for tight end Jonnu Smith on a bootleg-left.
"He's gonna make our defense that much better, pass game and run game" Elliott said regarding Ramsey. "I think we can be a Top 5 defense, maybe No. 1 if we do the right things consistently throughout the season."

Back together again:NFL teams are celebrating 'Training Camp: Back Together Weekend' beginning today, a chance for fans across the league to watch their teams in action, and Steelers fans turned out at Saint Vincent College to watch the black and gold on Saturday and a large crowd is expected on Sunday.
Coach Mike Tomlin welcomed the fans to camp, speaking to them prior to practice, and then introduced former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter Sr., who is a part of the Steelers Hall of Honor Class of 2025, to the crowd.
"We're just so honored to be here with you guys today," said Tomlin. "We appreciate the love and support we get from our fans. It is a hot one today, man. I hope we can entertain you doing some hardcore team training.
"But I need your help for one moment. We're recognizing a new Hall Honor class this year for 2025, and we've got one of the inductees here. Please join me in welcoming back Joey Porter Sr."
Porter took to the mic to address the crowd and thank them for their support through the years.
"Thank you, it's honor," said Porter. "I'm excited. It's something I've been me and my family been waiting on for a while and I'm happy to be inducted into the Hall of Honor so I'll always be remembered as a great Steelers player. I feel like the time that we play, we put in some work. We put a trophy inside of it inside of the stadium. We did our part, it's an honor. I appreciate it. Let's get ready for the new season."
About Back Together Weekend:

NFL Network's MJ Acosta-Ruiz and Kyle Brandt will be in Latrobe covering the Steelers.
Steelers honor 3 legends:The Steelers Hall of Honor is the ultimate recognition for those who have made immeasurable contributions to the organization, whether it be on the field, or off the field.
The newest additions to the group were welcomed into the fold when the Hall of Honor Class of 2025 was announced during a ceremony at Saint Vincent College as a part of the Steelers Back Together Weekend celebration.
The Hall of Honor Class of 2025 includes three individuals who were part of Super Bowl seasons for the Steelers, with two of them part of the same championship team.
Linebacker Joey Porter Sr., center Maurkice Pouncey and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger highlight a class that brought plenty of glory to the black and gold.
Porter was on hand for the announcement at Saint Vincent College, excited to have his name part of such an illustrious group, especially after being at Hall of Honor dinners for former teammates in the past.
"It's called the Hall of Honor for a reason," said Porter. "It's an honor to be in it. To be mentioned with all the guys that played before that are in the Hall of Honor is special. Being in Pittsburgh, you know the tradition of what it means to play for the Steelers.
"So just to be always mentioned amongst the greats, that's what makes it amazing. It's an honor."
Porter said when he got the call telling him the news it meant the world to him, finally having a dream fulfilled.
"I was excited," said Porter. "I've been waiting for the call for a while. I've been to a few of these, so it was good to finally get the call. No matter when it came, I was happy to get it, happy to make it. So, it was an exciting time."
The announcement on Saturday of Porter, Pouncey and Roethlisberger comes on a special day in the life of Porter and his wife, Christy. The day their son, Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., was born. Porter was at Steelers training camp himself at the time, and left the day before to go home to California to be there when he was born on July 26. He returned that same day, coming back to Saint Vincent College for practice the next day.
"It's cool because it's all part of the story," said Porter. "That was the first year I was going to start, and I had to fly home. I flew home on the 25th. She had him on the 26th and came back on the 26th, the same day as his birthday, the 26th. I went out there the night before. She had the baby, and I came back the same day he was born.
"He always was going be a training camp baby because we had him in training camp. Now that he plays for that same team and is at training camp, it's full circle because he is at Saint Vincent, the place I had to leave for a day when he was born. It's all surreal sometimes, but it's been a blessing."

A Hall of Fame visit:Training camp is oftentimes a homecoming for Steelers legends, and there was one who feels right at home at camp right now.
Hall of Fame safety Troy Polamalu is spending time at camp this week, taking in practices, visiting with coaches and scouts, and sharing his wisdom with younger players.
His two sons, Paisios and Ephraim, are with him, working as ballboys for part of camp.
"This brings back a lot of memories, but it creates new memories as well," said Polamalu. "I think it's a beautiful thing what the Rooney family has done. Starting the tradition with all of their children and grandchildren and nieces and nephews, all of them coming here as ballboys. So, it's really cool that a lot of former players have had their kids work as ballboys. So, it's just nice to bring the children back and it's a huge family."
Camp is also an opportunity for Polamalu to reunite with some of his former teammates, players who are family and even if they don't see them all of the time, they are always connected.
"We have a unique bond with our brotherhoods," said Polamalu. "What really binds a lot of our teams together are the accomplishments that we have together. And we just hope for the teams this year and the future teams to have that same experience."
Sitting on a bench overlooking the fields at Saint Vincent College, Polamalu was able to get a full view of the 2025 Steelers. He likes what he has seen, even if the changes have surprised him a little bit.
"Over the last couple of years, there have definitely been some changes," said Polamalu. "It's definitely been dramatic.
"I am looking forward to this year."

Mr. Rodgers' neighborhood:Aaron Rodgers remains the talk of training camp in the early going
at Saint Vincent College. The media keeps asking about the Steelers' new QB and the players
thus far have been more than happy to respond.
"He's a great guy," oensive tackle Broderick Jones emphasized. "He's real down to earth,
that's what I see. He's a very down-to-earth person, I like that.
"But he also comes with a little bit of the goofiness, trying to get everybody to relax. He wants
everybody to relax and just play their game. You can really tell and you can feel that coming
from him."
Jones, admittedly, didn't expect "goofiness" to enter the equation when anticipating how the
four-time NFL MVP would interact with his new teammates.
"I honestly didn't," Jones acknowledged. "I thought he was going to come in quiet, you know,
just like a vet. It's good to have that kind f spirit that he has just for the team as a collective.
"He has a couple slick remarks he'll say here and there, not even just to me but just in general
around the whole scene. You just gotta stay on your toes with him."
That goes on and o the field for Jones, who will be entrusted with protecting Rodgers' blind
side now that Jones has made the move from right tackle to left.
Jones declared himself up to the task.
"Always," he insisted. "I'm always grateful for the opportunity. Now I just gotta show what I can
do.
"It's no pressure. I've been playing football all my life. X's and O's are gonna continue to be X's
and O's at the end of the day. I just gotta continue to do what I can."

Building a bond:One of the most important connections in football is between a quarterback and his receivers, and things are off to a strong start with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his receivers.
Rodgers, who is entering his 21st season in the NFL and his first with the Steelers after signing as free agent, started that bond during mandatory minicamp in June, continued it in the offseason when he had the receivers come to Malibu, California where he lives, and is taking it to the next step at Saint Vincent College during training camp.
"We're developing it," said receiver Calvin Austin III. "That's why we come to training camp, to work out those kinks, get the timing and communication down.
"When you have a guy like A-Rod, the thing you've got to do is make sure that you're in the right spot and you're doing the thing that you need to do because he's going to be able to get the ball to wherever."
Football aside, Austin said getting to know Rodgers off the field and bond with the guys has been the best part so far, something that they hope pays dividends as the season wears on.
"It was cool, it was cool getting to know him, eating good food, just kicking it with the guys," said Austin of the time they spent in California. "That was probably the best part. That was definitely a cool experience.
"We're going to be with our teammates, these guys, throughout the season, more than you will be with your family almost. It was just cool to get to know one another.
"When you've got a quarterback that is just being himself, it makes it better. When you have a Hall of Fame guy you could be uptight around him, but not with him."
For Austin, it was also the first time he experienced seeing the ocean in person, something he loved and was taken aback with the overall experience.
"I saw dolphins," said a smiling Austin. "Roman (Wilson) got in and there was a big wave and like I legit thought he was going to drown. Obviously, being from Hawaii, it was something he's been doing since he was little. I didn't know people could just go without a board and go into a wave. That was crazy."
Rodgers said as they were having dinner at Nobu in Malibu, dolphins swam by in the ocean. One curious receiver asked if they 'pay' the dolphins to swim by at a certain time.
While Rodgers didn't give up who said it, Austin was asked if it was him.
"Look, that was my first time seeing dolphins," said Austin. "We had the view. We were right by the water. That was second to none."
While Rodgers wouldn't shed light on who definitely said it, his teammates shed light on his personality.
And what was learned about it is that he's got jokes.
"He's very smart, so he's definitely witty, and he's got a lot of smarts to get some good jokes," said Austin.
And do they come back at him with jokes yet?
"Ben Skowronek does," claimed Austin.
When asked about it, Skowronek just smiled and asked, 'He said that.'
He then also went on to say how great it has been working with Rodgers.
"It's awesome, honestly," said Skowronek. "He's played so many snaps. Being a football junkie like me, just ask some questions. He has so many reps on his belt. Just asking questions, just trying to learn as much as I can."
Skowronek, who has in fact seen the ocean before, said the overall experience with Rodgers and the receivers was valuable for their overall growth.
"It was a good experience,' said Skowronek. "We just talked so much ball. We had dinner for four straight hours just talking football and experiences and telling stories.
"That's really my favorite part about this game, not only Aaron but guys like Calvin, guys like Roman, I played with Robert Woods before. Just hearing stories. We've all played. We've had different experiences. We're all from different upbringings. The locker room is my favorite part, getting to know people. You learn about people. You grow as a person just knowing what people go through and stuff like that."
All about team:Tight end Pat Freiermuth wasted no time reaching out to fellow tight end Jonnu Smith when the team acquired him via a trade after the team's minicamp had concluded, knowing that it's all about teamwork.
"When he first got the news, he reached out to me ASAP," said Smith. "It was a good feeling. He's a younger guy than me and there's some things that I'd be able to pass along to him, and I'm excited for that as well. I don't have every tool in the toolbox as well. I'm always adapting and evolving my game and interested in seeing how he looks at the game and learn from his perspective as well.
"Pat has established himself here and I'm coming to co-exist with him and elevate his game as well as he's going to elevate mine."
The relationship between the two is already taking off, something that is going to pay dividends on the field.
"It was important," said Freiermuth. "I've been here five years. My contract is representative of how long I'm going to be here. I figured anyone who they bring in the room, it's my job to welcome them in with open arms.
"I think we're going to work well together. I think he brings a different skillset than I do. And I think we're going to complement each other well. He's going to complement the whole tight end room well. And I'm excited about the possibilities of the 12 personnel. (Offensive coordinator) Arthur (Smith) sat down with me and showed me what he was thinking and stuff, and so I'm very excited and I think it will be a big year for both of us."
The addition of Smith gives the offense another weapon, along with bringing in receiver DK Metcalf, and Freiermuth feels there are plenty of footballs to go around for quarterback Aaron Rodgers to mix things up.
"That's the goal of our offense, to spread it around, not be predictable," said Freiermuth. "We have the right quarterback to do that. We have the offense aligned to protect him. A lot of skilled players on the outside to make plays.
"That's why we're here on campus, to figure out who can do what and what we're good at as offense. We'll use that going forward into the season."
He said it:Defensive lineman Keeanu Benton on what he wants from this season:
"Just making more plays. Last year was still subpar for me personally. I feel like as a group and as a team, or with the coaching staff, we've talked about it, and just taking the next step as in finishing plays for me."
Getting to know you:Wide receiver DK Metcalf didn't know he'd have suite-mate company during his stay at training camp at Saint Vincent College.
Then he found out shortly after checking in at Rooney Hall he'd be camping in close proximity to quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
"He knocked on my door," Metcalf reported. "I thought it was the front door and it was actually my bathroom door, because we share a bathroom. He was like, 'Oh, man, I was hoping it was you.' I was like, 'I did not think I was gonna have a roommate but glad to see you, too, Aaron.' But yeah, it was a good experience just to see his face and know we could continue conversations outside the meeting room."
Such conversations are ones Metcalf intends to have with Rodgers as often as possible.
"I'm gonna try to soak up as much knowledge as I can, going to listen to everything that he says, even the critiques that he has on my game," Metcalf maintained. "I'm going to be willing and open, go searching for those answers from him.
"He's had great receivers in his past. I'm just trying to be another one."
Metcalf acknowledged he hadn't experienced dorm life "since 16." But the destination camp the Steelers are staging appeals to him beyond the opportunity to interact with his new QB.
"It's a good experience just to be around the teammates, the guys," Metcalf said. "These are my new teammates. I get a fresh start learning everybody's name, where they're from, number, what they like to do, who likes to play video games, who's very cerebral, who likes to read a book.
"I'm just trying to learn everybody so it's going to be easy to play with each other on Sunday."
Among Metcalf's early discoveries, Rodgers apparently doesn't like to play video games.
"I thought he did," Metcalf said. "He waked in my room yesterday and he's like, 'Oh, you're gaming,' and he just walked out."
Metcalf also reported Rodgers has arrived as advertised as a leader.
"He talks to everybody," Metcalf said. "He loves to crack jokes, he's very sarcastic. And then how he commands the huddle when he gets in there, everybody is quiet and listens to him. He definitely has that presence when he's in the huddle. And then he commands the leadership and respect when he's off the field."

Feeling a hunger:For defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, starting his 15th training camp is something he welcomes in a way only he can.
Heyward has a passion for the game, a thirst for more, a hunger for something that he has yet to taste.
He wants the ultimate goal.
He wants to win the Super Bowl.
"There's a hunger," said Heyward. "I know I'm in a rare group who gets to see Year 15. It's something I constantly think about. There are things I want to check off before I hang them up and I haven't reached those goals yet."
Heyward knows the expectations are high with all the moves the Steelers have made in the offseason.
"You just have to answer on the field," said Heyward. "Everybody's going to have an opinion of what we need to improve on. It's simple to say (do your) 1/11th, but just the buy-in, week in and week out, and understanding that we've just got to be constant. It can't be a roller coaster where we're riding our highs, and then going down our lows.
"I think to be number one defense, it can't just be for week one through week seven. It's got to a continued grind, and at the end of the season we've got to be playing our best football."
Heyward has seen a lot in his first 14 seasons with the Steelers, but he admits the moves this offseason were ones he didn't fully expect, which included trading for Jalen Ramsey, DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith and signing free agent Aaron Rodgers to name a few.
"You never know what's going to happen, what's outside the locker room," said Heyward. "There were definitely some surprising things. Things I thought I would never see happen.
"But I think we have a good football team, and we'll see what happens."
What Heyward believes everyone in the organization hopes happen, is exactly what keeps him coming back.
Putting another Lombardi in the team's trophy case.
"I think the front office has done their job to put this team together," said Heyward. "It's up to the players to make that come to fruition.
"We're not trying to be paper champs. We're trying to be champs. You don't win the Super Bowl now, but you learn how to be a better team. And you learn to be better situationally. And we're going to be put in moments during camp, and we should be able to answer those."
Part of his journey:Tight end Jonnu Smith, who was acquired in a trade with the Miami Dolphins, is excited to be in the black and gold and reunited with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
Smith, who is in his ninth season in the NFL, has appeared in 124 games, with 84 starts, while playing for four teams, including the Tennessee Titans (2017-20), New England Patriots (2021-22), Atlanta Falcons (2023) and Miami Dolphins (2024).
He has 307 receptions for 3,307 yards, a 10.8-yard average, and 28 touchdowns. He also has 19 carries for 126 yards, a 6.6-yard average, and one touchdown.
Smith, who is day-to-day in camp right now, had his best season in 2024 with the Dolphins. He played in 17 games, starting six, and set career highs with 88 receptions for 884 yards, a 10-yard average. He tied his career-high with eight touchdowns. He was the only Dolphins player selected to the Pro Bowl Games in 2024.
Smith spent one season with the Falcons during Arthur Smith's tenure. He played in 17 games, starting six, and finished with 50 receptions for 582 yards, an 11.6-yard average, and three touchdowns.
"It's of been a part of the story of my career, Art being instrumental in my journey," said Jonnu Smith of the two reconnecting. "It's a good feeling to be back with him. To able to collide with him again and continue to achieve something that we both have set in mind, it's a good thing."
Smith likes what he sees from the Steelers offense so far, and believe he and fellow tight end Pat Freiermuth can be the best combo in the NFL. They just have to show it on the field.
"We've got to prove it," said Smith. "We can say all of that. "We've got to prove it. We've got to go out and prove it"."
Smith is brand new to the Steelers offense, even if he does have a relationship with his offensive coordinator, but he already loves what he sees.
"The experience from the top down. Again, we've got a former head coach, and we've always had a lot of success with Art being an offensive coordinator. And I know it starts there. Aaron leading us. Those two components right there are a lot pieces to this puzzle that we're trying to put together. And so having guys, me going into my ninth year. DK (Metcalf) having a lot of experience, these young guys are going to give us versatility. We've got to continue to piece this puzzle together, so it's an exciting time for us."
Give to get in the secondary:Count cornerback Joey Porter Jr. among those in the Steelers' contingent that has checked in to Saint Vincent College who never saw the trade of free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick coming.
"I was shocked by it," Porter acknowledged today. "I came in, 'Mink' was that guy. I always watched 'Mink.' I loved his game, respect his game. It kinda sucks he's not a part of our team but we got some great additions.
"It's a bittersweet feeling."
Porter has no mixed feelings whatsoever regarding cornerback Jalen Ramsey joining the Steelers as part of the return in the Fitzpatrick transaction.
Head coach Mike Tomlin spoke glowingly upon the opening of camp about the options the Ramsey acquisition brings to the defense, including the anticipated ability of the Steelers defense to "match up and play man-to-man versus anyone."
Porter couldn't agree more.
"We had a talk about it the other day and I agree with all the points (Tomlin) made up," Porter continued. "We have elite corners on our team now. I'm just happy about it."
The start of training camp commenced the sorting out process in the secondary.
Tomlin wasn't specific regarding the anticipated new division of labor among, other than to maintain Ramsey, Porter and Darius Slay, a free-agent addition at cornerback, "are going to be on the field, I don't care what offenses come out in."
"He said we're all on the field at the same time," Porter confirmed. "However the matchup plays out, that's what we're gonna do. I just know that we're al gonna be working together. We just gotta start it off with camp.
"I feel like it's gonna be a hard matchup for any offense to go against three elite DBs that we have. It's gonna be a nightmare for them."

It's go time:Linebacker Patrick Queen said he feels more comfortable in his surroundings in Year 2 with the Steelers, ready to attack training camp head on with a defense that has gone through a lot of changes this offseason.
Queen said he talked to Coach Mike Tomlin before heading to camp, and he is fired up and ready to roll.
"It's a little more familiar," said Queen. "They expect the bling. We are just ready for the good vibes. Mike T called me yesterday and we had a little talk. I am excited."
And what was Tomlin's message to Queen?
"It's go time," said Queen. "There is no more getting acclimated. There is no more trying to get familiar with each other. It's time to go."
One of the additions to the defense Queen is excited about is cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was acquired in a trade from the Miami Dolphins.
"My type of guy, my type of football player," said Queen. "Just everything that you want with somebody in the secondary. Somebody that's going to be physical, somebody that's going to talk trash, somebody that's going to be able to come down and make tackles. I think that's probably the best way I can sum it up."
Queen said is approach in camp is to just get better with every step, something that is constantly his focus.
"Just improving day-by-day," said Queen. "I don't think there's no main focus that you could do just to try to overcome or anything. I think it's just every single day put my head down, going to work and try to get better at every single detail that I can."
He said it:
"Any way I can get on the field and help the team, that's what I'm here for. I know my role, I know what they want from me. As far as being there for the guys, supporting them on and off the field, being a player they can rely on to come in and there's no fall off. In that aspect, I think that's just one thing that we can do better." linebacker Nick Herbig
Another journey:Receiver Robert Woods is welcoming the camaraderie of being together on a college campus for training camp and is ready to roll in his first season with the Steelers.
"I would say it's exciting," said Woods. "The offseason, you've kind of been working and training and building up to this. And just yesterday, packing and getting ready for today. I feel like it's another year, another journey full of excitement. We've got a great roster, great coaches. Excited to see where this year goes."
Woods, who will be entering his 13th season in the NFL, signed a one-year contract with the Steelers in the offseason. He has appeared in 171 games, with 145 starts. He has 683 receptions for 8,233 yards, a 12.1-yard average, and 38 touchdowns. He also has 75 rushing attempts for 514 yards and five touchdowns.
He will be working with a quarterback who also brings a lot of experience to the table in Aaron Rodgers, and he is excited about it.
"I had some good quarterbacks, with Jared Goff, Matthew Stafford, so great to partner up with Aaron Rodgers just to be able to throw with him and catch with him," said Woods. "Obviously, he's a Super Bowl winning quarterback, dynamic in the pocket and out the pocket and a California guy."
Ramsey ranked No. 66 in Top 100: Current NFL players have once again voted on their Top 100 Players of 2025 in the league, and newly acquired cornerback Jalen Ramsey is among the Steelers to make the NFL Top 100 list this year.
Ramsey, who was acquired via a trade with the Miami Dolphins last month, came in at No. 66 on the list. He was No. 25 last year and has appeared on the list every year since 2017.
Ramsey, who will be entering his 10th season in the NFL, is a three-time Associate Press All-Pro selection, earning first-team honors in 2017, 2020 and 2021, He is also a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, earning the honors from 2017-2023. He has been named to the NFL Top 100 Players list the last seven years.
He has appeared in 135 games, starting 134 of them. He has 534 career tackles, 432 of them solo stops, 108 passes defensed, 27 tackles for a loss, 24 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, three sacks seven forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. His 108 passes defensed are ranked third among active players since entering the league in 2016, while his 24 interceptions ranks fourth.
Ramsey has started 10 postseason games and was part of the Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl LVI championship team.
Ramsey spent the last two seasons with the Dolphins, after they acquired him via a trade with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. In two years with the Dolphins, Ramsey appeared in 27 games, starting all of them. He had 82 tackles, 57 of them solo stops, 16 passes defensed, five interceptions and six tackles for a loss with Miami.
During his time with the Rams, Ramsey appeared in 57 games, starting 56. He had 242 tackles, 193 of them solo stops, 10 interceptions, 47 passes defensed, 15 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Ramsey began his NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Ramsey was named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team in his first season.
During his time with the Jaguars he appeared in 51 games, all starts, and recorded 210 tackles, 182 of them solo stops. He had nine interceptions, one of them returned for a touchdown, 45 passes defensed, six tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Ramsey played college football at Florida State where he was a first-team All-American, finishing with 180 tackles, 119 of them solo stops, five sacks, three interceptions, 26 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries as a three-year starter.
Ready to roll:Safety Juan Thornhill, who is entering his eighth season in the NFL, signed with the Steelers this offseason after spending the last two years with the Cleveland Browns.
Thornhill is excited for the start of camp, accustomed to holding camp at a remote site after he also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, where they held their camp away from their practice facility as well.
"That's what we're here for, because we've got a little bit of time," said Thornhill. "It's going to go by fast though, but the biggest thing is just we've got to spend as much time together as possible.
"Everybody's new, the defense is new to us. So, I think the more time we spend together, the better we will be together."
Thornhill welcomes the physical nature that he heard Steelers training camp will be, anxious to get on the field and see what happens.
"I've asked a lot of people about it," said Thornhill. "They said it's a hard camp. But the thing is, this isn't my first time going away from camp. I was in Kansas City. We went to St. Joseph, Missouri, where we had to basically stay in a dorm. A lot of physical contact, like tackling, things like that. So, I'm used to it. I'm just ready to work."
Ready to go:The Steelers arrive at training camp today, and we will have all of the latest news featured in the camp blog throughout the next few weeks.
From today's check-in to practices and off-the-field happenings, you will find it all here.
Check back throughout camp for updates on a regular basis.
