NEW YORK, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks finished lower on Monday as the strong late-November rebound took a bumpier turn at the start of the final trading month of the year.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 427.09 points, or 0.9 percent, to 47,289.33. The S&P 500 slipped 36.46 points, or 0.53 percent, to 6,812.63. The Nasdaq Composite shed 89.76 points, or 0.38 percent, to 23,275.92.
The decline ended a streak of consecutive gains with the three indexes in the previous five trading days.
Eight of the S&P 500's eleven sectors closed in the red, with utilities and health care leading the laggards, down 2.35 percent and 1.49 percent, respectively. Energy and technology were the only sectors to advance, rising 0.91 percent and 0.07 percent.
In the artificial intelligence trade, Broadcom and Super Micro Computer dropped more than 4 percent and 1 percent, respectively, reflecting continued profit-taking in some high-flying names. Meanwhile, Synopsys jumped 4.85 percent after Nvidia announced an investment in the company. Nvidia shares fell in the beginning but later reversed and ended up 1.65 percent.
Outside of tech, retailers including Ulta and Walmart gained as the holiday shopping season moved into full swing. Shopify was the worst performer in the S&P 500 on Cyber Monday, sliding nearly 6 percent after the company said some merchants were facing "issues with accessing Admins and POS systems."
U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers' index for November contracted for the ninth month in a row and slid to 48.2 from 48.7 in October, according to a release by the Institute for Supply Management on Monday.
December is often a strong month for equities, but analysts warn that the usual Santa Claus rally may be less certain this year, given the mix of economic and market uncertainties that have weighed on sentiment.
"Stocks are going through a period of digestion," said Robert Schein, chief investment officer at Blanke Schein Wealth Management. "But we think the backdrop for stocks remains strong right now, especially given the high likelihood that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates again next week."
