Veteran outfielder Adolis Garcia signed a one-year deal worth a reported $10 million with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
'His power stands out in any part of the ballpark,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Tuesday as the team introduced Garcia to the media. 'He's a really good defender, he can really throw, he's a great guy.
'If Adolis does what he normally does, and he's just himself, I think he's one of those protector guys for those left-handed bats. I'm expecting really good things from Adolis.'
Garcia had high praise for a team that has seen successful regular seasons ending in postseason heartbreak the past three years running.
'It's a great team. It's a great town. I like the way they compete. I love the dynamic of the team and that was the biggest intrigue about me coming here,' Garcia said via video released by the Phillies.
The Texas Rangers non-tendered the two-time All-Star in November after he batted .227 with a career lows in home runs (19) and RBIs (75) over 135 games in 2025.
It was the second straight season of declining production from Garcia, 32, who set career highs with 39 home runs and 107 RBIs for the World Series champion Rangers in 2023.
'I want to be able to focus on being a better version of myself to add a piece to this winning team,' Garcia said. 'I just want to go and play my defense and hopefully my bat will be there, and I just want to be a piece to contribute to this good team.'
Garcia is a career .237 hitter with 141 homers, 459 RBIs and 74 stolen bases in 766 games with the St. Louis Cardinals (2018) and Rangers (2020-25). He made the American League All-Star teams in 2021 and 2023 and won a Gold Glove in right field in 2023.
The Phillies are expected to either trade or release current right fielder Nick Castellanos before spring training, per The Athletic, and Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski's comments Tuesday supported that expectation.
'We look at him (Garcia) as being our right fielder, and then we're in a position where we're basically pretty well set out there,' Dombrowski said, 'because with Justin Crawford being able to play center or left, Brandon Marsh the other, mixed in with a little bit of Otto Kemp out there. (Johan) Rojas is a backup in center field, too, and then (Gabriel) Rincones coming.'
