MEXICO CITY, Mexico: At least 11 were killed and another 12 injured after gunmen opened fire in a soccer field in central Mexico over the weekend.
Posts on social media platforms by Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto stated that the gunmen arrived at the end of a soccer match and began spraying bullets in the field at random.
Ten people were killed on the spot, and one died later at a hospital. Among the wounded were a woman and a minor.
Prieto appealed to President Claudia Sheinbaum for help to control the violence and said the attack was part of a "crime wave" in the city.
The prosecutor's office in Guanajuato said it is looking into the case and working with federal officials to improve security in the area.
Guanajuato had the highest number of murders in Mexico last year. A local gang called Santa Rosa de Lima has been fighting with the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The mayor said that criminal groups are trying to control or scare the authorities, but they will not succeed.
Overall, the Mexican government says the country's murder rate in 2025 was the lowest since 2016, with about 17.5 murders for every 100,000 people. However, experts warned that the numbers may not show the full level of violence in the country.
