JACKSONVILLESenior writer John Oehser and Jaguars analyst Bucky Brooks examine the Jaguars' quarterback position in this position-by-position look at the '26 offseason:
Position:Quarterback.
Position coach:Spencer Whipple.
2025 starters:Trevor Lawrence(17).
Others:Nick Mullens,Carter Bradley.
2025 at a glance:Lawrence's development into a true franchise, MVP-caliber quarterback defined the Jaguars' season at the position and helped define the team's AFC South Championship season. Lawrence set a franchise record and finished third in the NFL with 38 touchdowns 29 passing and nine rushing and his accelerated improvement and efficiency keyed an eight-game winning streak to end the regular season that clinched the Jaguars' first AFC South title since 2022. He was named a finalist for AP NFL Most Valuable Player and AP Comeback Player of the Year. After dealing with injuries late in the 2023 season and finishing the 2024 season on injured reserve, Lawrence spent the '25 offseason learningHead Coach Liam Coen's offense. He then improved dramatically throughout the regular season, peaking through the final eight weeks of the season when he went without a turnover in four consecutive games from Weeks 13-16 while registering a passer rating of more than 100 in each of those games. He also in Weeks 15-16 became the fourth player in NFL history to account for 10 touchdowns and zero turnovers in a two-game span, joining Josh Allen (2024), Drew Brees (2019) and Patrick Mahomes (2018). He was named AFC Player of the Week following a Week 15 victory over the New York Jets in which he threw for five touchdowns and ran for another, and he was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for December/January. Lawrence, after finishing the last two seasons dealing with significant injuries, did not miss a game in 2025 and played relatively injury-free. Mullens played in five games, all in late-game situations with the Jaguars holding big leads, and completed three of three passes for 19 yards.
Offseason storyline:This figures to be a comparatively quiet position this offseason, with Lawrence and Mullens both under contract. The Jaguars re-signed Bradley who signed with the Jaguars' practice squad on September 30 to a reserve/future contract on January 12.
Free agents as of March 11:None.
Bucky Brooks' top three free-agent quarterbacks:1, Malik Willis, Green Bay Packers; 2, Daniel Jones, Indianapolis Colts; 3, Russell Wilson, New York Giants.
Bucky Brooks' top three collegiate quarterback prospects:1, Fernando Mendoza, Indiana; 2, Ty Simpson, Alabama; 3, Carson Beck, Miami.
Oehser analysis:Lawrence's ascension and development not only made him a finalist for AP MVP in 2025, it stood as the clear and obvious most important storyline of the Jaguars' remarkable turnaround season. He established himself as one of the NFL's best players at his position and one of the best players overall and he is now a quarterback around which the franchise can build moving forward. The intriguing storyline here is where Lawrence can build and improve moving forward. He improved dramatically in his first season under Coen, flourishing after Coen counseled him to "let it rip" and play free without worrying about mistakes. Lawrence spent the 2025 offseason working on fundamentals and footwork necessary to flourish in Coen's scheme. His comfort level within that scheme improved as the season continued, a trend that should only continue as he moves into Year 2 working with Coen.
Brooks analysis:Lawrence, the No.1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, flashed MVP-caliber potential down the stretch, leading the Jaguars on an eight-game winning streak to close the season as AFC South champs. Lawrence accounted for 25 total touchdowns during the streak, while displaying the dynamic game that many evaluators envisioned when he was hailed as a "generational" prospect after a legendary career at Clemson. The fifth-year pro established a new franchise record with 38 total scores and posted the third 4,000-yard passing season of his career. With his overall effectiveness as a dual-threat playmaker vastly improved under Coen, the Jaguars' QB1 could emerge as a top-five player with another season to master the system. Mullens was relegated to mop-up duty, but the veteran is a valuable commodity as a high-end backup with significant experience within the scheme.
