NEW YORK CITY, New York: The federal trademark office has received applications from the Trump Organization to trademark the use of the President's name on airports and dozens of things, such as umbrellas, travel bags, flight suits, and even on buses shuttling passengers.
The legal filings come at a time when people in Florida are arguing over a new state bill that would rename the Palm Beach airport after Donald Trump. At the same time, there is also a disagreement about funding a tunnel project between New York City and New Jersey. Some proposals suggest naming that tunnel, and even Dulles International Airport in Virginia, after Trump as well.
The Trump Organization said it filed the applications because of the Florida bill. The company said it is not trying to make money but only wants to stop misuse of the Trump name, which it claims is the "most infringed trademark in the world."
In a statement, the company said that the President and his family would not receive any royalties, license fees, or other payments if the airport near his Mar-a-Lago club — currently called Palm Beach International Airport — is renamed.
However, the company did not answer questions about whether it might charge fees in the future if other airports or merchandise used the name.
Josh Gerben, a trademark lawyer who found the filings, said he had never seen anything like this before. He wrote on his blog that while many presidents and officials have had places named after them, it is unheard of for a sitting president's private company to apply for trademark rights before the place is named. He called the filings completely unprecedented.
Traditionally, presidents usually have to wait many years after leaving office — or even until after their death — before an airport is named after them. Bill Clinton waited 11 years, Ronald Reagan waited nine, and Gerald Ford waited 22. John F. Kennedy was the fastest, with an airport named just one month after his assassination.
If Trump does get an airport named after him, it would join a growing list of places and organizations that have recently been renamed in his honor. These include the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a road near Mar-a-Lago called President Donald J. Trump Boulevard, and a future class of battleships that has not yet been built.
The trademark applications were filed by a family company unit called DTTM Operations with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The filings cover three possible names: President Donald J. Trump International Airport, Donald J. Trump International Airport, and DJT.
The company's claim that Trump's name is the most copied trademark in the world could not be quickly proven. Other luxury brands, such as Gucci, Prada, and Rolex, have also faced large numbers of counterfeit products for decades.
Over the past year, the Trump family has put the Trump brand on towers, golf resorts, and housing projects in countries such as Dubai, India, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. The company has also sold Trump-branded electric guitars, Bibles, and sneakers, all handled by the DTTM unit.
Responding to criticism that he and his family are profiting from the presidency, Trump has said his business is managed in a trust by his sons and that he is not involved in its day-to-day operations.
