The Dolphins have officially signed tight end Ben Sims. Entering his fourth year, Sims spent his first two NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers. In 2025, he played for both Green Bay and the team that signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2023, the Minnesota Vikings.
Sims has played 45 games with eight starts in his NFL career, logging 11 receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown.
1. Quick study
Sims didn't break camp with the Vikings in 2023 but was claimed off waivers by the Packers, which immediately placed him on the 53-man roster. He joined two more rookies, Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave, a pair of Day 2 draft picks, to round out the only tight end room in the NFL with three rookies that season.
Conventional thought says the only position on offense more complex than tight end is quarterback. Tight ends, in addition to quarterbacks, are the only players that must know pass blocking, run blocking and pass route assignments. Still, Sims and his fellow rookies accounted for 1,437 offensive snaps.
Sims caught four passes for 21 yards and the first touchdown of his career, but his job description made him focus elsewhere the blocking game. He took offensive snaps in every game he played with 134 of his 212 snaps coming as a run blocker. He is what the NFL calls a classic Y tight end, a player that lines up attached to the formation and is known for his blocking prowess.
2. Kicking game contributions
Sims doubled his snaps as a pro by being a key part of the Packers special teams unit. He has played 244 snaps in the third phase over his career, most notably on kick return. As a rookie in 2023, Sims played all 79 kick return snaps for Green Bay, a unit that led the NFL in kick return yards with 783.
3. Heading back south
Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Sims is heading back south after a three-year stint in the NFC North. He played his college ball at Baylor, where he made his mark among all-time Bears tight ends. He finished his career with the most touchdowns by a Baylor Bear (12), second-most receptions (78) and fourth-most yards (785).
