BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China claims historic silver at men's ice hockey World Championship Division I Group B
China beat Estonia 3-2 in a penalty shootout at the 2026 IIHF Men's World Championship Division I Group B on May 5 to win the silver medal, the country's best result since the current tournament format was introduced in 2001. China had led 3-0 before Estonia rallied to force overtime.
Wang Haoxi was named Best Defenseman, while Hou Yuyang finished as China's Best Player after recording seven goals and five assists.
2. China wraps up Xi'an artistic swimming World Cup with five golds
China's artistic swimmers wrapped up the 2026 World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup in Xi'an on May 3 with five golds, three silvers and one bronze across 11 events.
Xu Huiyan was one of the biggest stars of the meet, winning the women's solo technical title and teaming up with Lin Yanjun to claim gold in the women's duet technical event. China also won gold in the team technical routine.
On the second competition day, Guo Muye captured the men's solo free gold, adding to his earlier title as part of China's team technical lineup. China then closed the competition with another gold in the mixed duet free event through teenage pair Shi Haoyue and Cao Yixin.
3. China avenges S. Korea to reach men's semifinal at table tennis team worlds
China defeated South Korea 3-0 in the men's quarterfinals at the 2026 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals on May 8, avenging its earlier group-stage loss to the same opponent. Wang Chuqin overcame Oh Jun-sung in five games to give China the lead, before Lin Shidong beat Jang Woo-jin in straight sets to put the defending champions on the brink of victory.
Liang Jingkun then sealed the win with a straight-games victory over An Jae-hyun as China advanced to the semifinals, where it will face either France or Brazil.
4. China loses to Indonesia in the AFC U17 Asian Cup
Indonesia edged China 1-0 in their Group B match at the 2026 AFC U17 Asian Cup on May 5 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Keanu Senjaya scored the only goal in the 87th minute to secure three points for Indonesia.
China controlled possession and created several chances throughout the match, but failed to capitalize against a disciplined Indonesian defense and an in-form goalkeeper. China will next face Japan on May 9.
5. China beats France to retain badminton's Thomas Cup
Defending champion China defeated France 3-1 on May 3 to reclaim the Thomas Cup title in Horsens, Denmark, winning the trophy for the 12th time since 1982.
Shi Yuqi and Weng Hongyang won tough singles matches for China before He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu sealed the victory in doubles. France's Alex Lanier scored the team's only point by defeating Li Shifeng.
