BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. Wang/Sun fall in mixed doubles final at WTT U.S. Smash
Chinese pair Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha lost 3-2 to South Korea's Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin in the mixed doubles final at the World Table Tennis (WTT) United States Smash on July 3.
Lim and Shin won the opening game 11-9 before Wang and Sun prevailed in the following two games 11-6, 11-7. The top-seeded South Korean pair then showed resilience to come back with consecutive wins 11-7, 11-8 to seal the victory.
Earlier in the day, Sun swept Dina Meshref of Egypt 11-8, 11-3, 11-5 to reach the women's singles quarterfinals, while China's Chen Xingtong and Wang Yidi also secured berths in the last eight.
In the men's doubles, China's Wen Ruibo and Yuan Licen set up a final clash with their compatriots Lin Shidong and Huang Youzheng, as both pairs seized straight-game wins in the semifinals.
2. Zhang, Wang suffer second-round exits at Wimbledon
China's Zhang Shuai and Wang Xinyu suffered straight-set defeats in the women's singles second round at Wimbledon on July 1.
Zhang lost to 10th seed Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-2, while Wang fell 7-5, 6-0 to 11th seed Belinda Bencic. Their elimination meant that no Chinese player remains in the singles draw.
Before them, Zheng Qinwen suffered another first-round loss to the Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova, falling 6-4, 6-4. It marked the third time Siniakova has beaten Zheng in the opening round at Wimbledon after victories in 2023 and 2025.
In the men's draw, Wu Yibing pushed seven-time winner Novak Djokovic to four sets, but still fell 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in three hours and 12 minutes.
3. China loses to Japan in key FIBA World Cup qualifier
China suffered a 92-73 defeat to Japan in a FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers Group B match on July 3 at the Liaoning Gymnasium, leaving the hosts in need of a victory over Chinese Taipei to advance to the next stage.
Hu Jinqiu led China with 15 points, while Liao Sanning and He Xining added 14 and 12, respectively.
Keisei Tominaga's buzzer-beating three-pointer handed Japan a 22-21 lead at the end of the first period. China's offense unraveled in the second quarter, as a series of unforced turnovers fueled Japan's transition attack and allowed the visitors to build a double-digit advantage. He Xining scored five straight points to keep China within striking distance, but Japan still led 50-40 at halftime.
China tried to rally after the break by feeding Hu in the paint, but Japan continued to capitalize in transition. Ryusei Sasaki hit two three-pointers, and Yuta Watanabe led the third-quarter scoring as Japan maintained a comfortable lead.
Japan remained in control in the final quarter with its up-tempo offense, while China struggled offensively and failed to secure key rebounds, as the visitors cruised to victory.
With the defeat, China slipped to fourth in Group B with a 2-3 record, setting up a decisive showdown against Chinese Taipei, which also stands at 2-3, on July 6.
