LONDON, U.K.: British police are investigating donations worth at least £500,000 (US$671,300) given to Nigel Farage's Reform UK party. The money was reportedly donated by the mother of a close political ally who was convicted of wire fraud, according to a report.
Police said they were looking into possible violations of political donation laws. These could include concealing the source of the money or providing false information to a party's treasurer.
A spokesperson for London's Metropolitan Police said an investigation began in February 2025 after the Electoral Commission referred the case. The referral concerned donations made to a political party before the 2024 UK General Election.
Police said two people had been questioned, but no arrests had been made. They did not confirm the names of those involved.
Farage has faced questions in recent weeks about his party's funding and his personal finances. These include claims about undisclosed gifts from a cryptocurrency billionaire and links to George Cottrell, who was convicted of fraud in the United States.
Farage has denied any wrongdoing. He said he received the donation from the cryptocurrency investor before announcing his candidacy in the 2024 election, so he did not need to declare it.
The report said police were examining payments made by Fiona Cottrell, the mother of George Cottrell, to Reform UK before the 2024 election.
George Cottrell, a long-time political ally of Farage, was jailed in the United States in 2017 after admitting to wire fraud. He now works in the cryptocurrency sector.
Farage, a prominent supporter of Brexit, recently said he would step down from his parliamentary seat and run again. He said this move was intended to seek public support and to respond to criticism of his finances.
