BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China cruises past Chinese Taipei to book place in FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers second round
China advanced to the second round of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers with a comfortable 92-74 victory over Chinese Taipei in its final Group B match on July 6 at Goyang Gymnasium in South Korea.
Bouncing back from its loss to Japan on July 3, China controlled the game from the opening tip, dominating the paint 44-26 and holding Chinese Taipei to just 28 first-half points.
China entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 24-point lead. Although Chinese Taipei attempted a late comeback, with Lin Ting-Chien scoring five straight points on a three-pointer and a pull-up jumper, Li Hongquan responded with a driving layup and a three-pointer to halt the momentum. Chinese Taipei never managed to cut the deficit into single digits, as China secured a convincing victory.
2. Sun Yingsha crowned women's singles champion at WTT U.S. Smash
World No. 1 Sun Yingsha claimed her second WTT Grand Smash title of the season, fighting off a resurgent Kuai Man in a seven-game thriller to win the women's singles crown at the WTT United States Smash on July 5.
Sun, who had already claimed five Grand Smash titles, edged her compatriot in a grueling final, prevailing 11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 7-11, 10-12, 11-4.
China's Wang Manyu and Kuai Man claimed the women's doubles title, while Wen Ruibo and Yuan Licen emerged victorious in an all-Chinese men's doubles final on July 4.
Facing Japan's Miwa Harimoto and Hina Hayata, winners of this year's WTT Singapore Smash, top-seeded Wang and Kuai went through an intense battle for a 13-11, 4-11, 14-12, 11-8 win.
In their duel against top seeds Lin Shidong and Huang Youzheng, Wen and Yuan won the opening game 11-9, but found themselves on the back foot after losing the next two games 11-8, 11-6. However, they bounced back strongly afterwards, winning 11-7, 11-9 to secure the title.
3. China sweeps Ukraine in women's VNL
China swept Ukraine 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 in the preliminary phase of the Women's Volleyball Nations League on July 9.
Zhuang Yushan led China with 18 points. Wang Yuanyuan had 16.
China bounced back strongly after losing a five-set thriller to Canada on July 8.
Kiera Van Ryk scored 27 points, while Alexa Gray and Abagayle Guezen added 24 and 22, as Canada prevailed 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11.
Tang Xin led China with 22 points, while Zhuang added 19.
The preliminary phase features 18 teams competing across multiple venues. Host China and the top seven other teams in the standings will advance to the finals, scheduled for July 22 to 26 in Macao, China.
4. China suffers 2-point loss to Australia again in women's basketball warmups
Zhang Ziyu and Wang Siyu combined for 43 points, but China's late comeback fell just short as Australia held on for an 84-82 victory in the second of two Women's Basketball World Cup warmup games on July 9.
Zhang scored a game-high 25 points off the bench and added 11 rebounds, including 11 points in the fourth quarter, as the two teams produced another closely contested game after Australia's two-point win on July 7.
Wang finished with 18 points, nine of them in the final quarter, and had a chance to help China force overtime in the closing seconds before Australia's defense broke up the decisive play.
The two games in Melbourne were part of both teams' preparations for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, which will be held in Germany in September.
5. Tanzania hands China first defeat at U17 international tournament
China lost 2-0 to Tanzania on July 8 in the four-nation CFA Team China International Youth Football Tournament.
Tanzania, runner-up at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, controlled much of the match with pace and physicality. After Hasani Mussa Kizinga struck the crossbar from a 38th-minute penalty, he made amends just before halftime with a long-range strike to give Tanzania the lead.
China showed greater attacking intent after the break but struggled to break down Tanzania's organized defense. Tanzania had a goal disallowed for offside in the 69th minute before Dismas Shida Athanasi capitalized on a defensive error deep into stoppage time to seal the victory.
China will face Spain, Fiji and Morocco in Group H at the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar from November 19 to December 13.
