A member of the Berkeley-based animal welfare group Direct Action Everywhere is due in court Tuesday in the Central Valley, accused of taking two baby goats from Vera Goat Dairy in Stratford last year in order to get them medical care.
Carla Cabral, an organizer with with group, was charged by the Kings County District Attorney with two felonies and a misdemeanor. Cabral said the live goats were sick, and tests on carcasses Cabral removed from the property showed malnutrition and parasites. Cabral pointed out that animal control investigated but found no violations.
"It's a shame that authorities spend so much taxpayer money going after whistleblowers instead of holding the industries accountable," Cabral asserted.
The dairy owner did not issue a statement, but Meyenberg, the company buying the goat milk and distributing it to high-end grocery stores, called the claims “baseless.”
Cabral is also being prosecuted for felony burglary along with 46 others for taking sick beagle puppies in March from a breeder in Wisconsin called Ridglan Farms.
The company, which sold dogs for animal testing, agreed in a legal settlement to close and transfer all remaining animals to sanctuaries. Cabral plans to plead not guilty at the arraignment Aug. 24.
"I couldn't let that stand," Cabral stressed. "I believe that we all have a legal and moral right to protect animals and to rescue them if they're being abused."
Ridglan said in a statement to local media that their animals are happy and healthy, the facility passed two recent government inspections, and called the activists’ claims a “years-long harassment campaign targeting the research facility’s owners, staff and neighbors."
