NEW YORK, New York - U.S. stocks kicked off the trading week on a mixed and mostly negative fashion Monday, as a sharp decline in technology shares outweighed modest losses in blue-chip industrials.
The Nasdaq Composite bore the brunt of the selling pressure, tumbling 408.43 points, or 1.55 percent, to close at 25,873.18.
The broader Standard and Poor's 500 also finished firmly in the red, shedding 60.05 points, or 0.79 percent, to settle at 7,515.34. The index traded in a narrow range between 7,506.41 and 7,565.37, with volume reaching 2.713 billion shares.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average proved more resilient, slipping just 138.37 points, or 0.26 percent, to end the session at 52,498.64, as a 407.344 million-share session saw the index move between 52,351.12 and 52,846.51.
The CBOE Volatility Index, Wall Street's so-called "fear gauge," spiked sharply higher, gaining 2.13 points, or 14.17 percent, to finish at 17.16. The index traded between 16.03 and 17.41 during the session.
Small-cap stocks underperformed alongside the tech sector, with the Russell 2000 Index losing 24.64 points, or 0.83 percent, to close at 2,953.17. The NYSE Composite Index eked out a smaller decline, falling 29.03 points, or 0.12 percent, to 23,896.05.
Overseas Markets Finish Mostly Higher
While U.S. markets struggled, European indexes posted a mostly positive session. The FTSE 100 in London managed a fractional gain, adding just 1.00 point, or 0.01 percent, to finish at 10,498.29. Germany's DAX P advanced 47.16 points, or 0.19 percent, to 25,114.25, while France's CAC 40 rose 25.69 points, or 0.31 percent, to 8,364.65. The EURO STOXX 50 Index edged up 1.05 points, or 0.02 percent, to 6,271.02, with the Euronext 100 Index adding 1.72 points, or 0.09 percent, to 1,909.58. Belgium's BEL 20 also gained, rising 10.37 points, or 0.19 percent.
In Asia, results were varied. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index closed up 38.60 points, or 0.16 percent, at 24,213.72, while Singapore's STI Index added 1.05 points, or 0.02 percent, to 5,470.34.
Australia's benchmarks edged lower, with the S&P/ASX 200 falling even further in early Tuesday morning trading, down 43.50 points, or 0.49 percent, to 8,765.00, and the broader All Ordinaries slipping 44.60 points, or 0.50 percent, to 8,958.40.
New Zealand's S&P/NZX 50 was also losing ground into Tuesday trading, the key index being down a further 64.64 points, or 0.47 percent, to 13,658.56.
In India, the S&P BSE Sensex rose 47.01 points, or 0.06 percent, to 77,616.40, while Indonesia's IDX Composite was a standout gainer, surging 113.48 points, or 1.92 percent, to 6,037.84. Malaysia's FTSE Bursa KLCI added 6.95 points, or 0.41 percent, to 1,698.44.
South Korea's KOSPI Composite rose 17.77 points, or 0.26 percent, to 6,824.70 on volume of 111,660, while in Taiwan, the TWSE Capitalization Weighted Stock Index gained 25.91 points, or 0.06 percent, to close at 45,380.52.
Americas and Emerging Markets Mixed
Canada's S&P/TSX Composite index dropped 52.59 points, or 0.15 percent, to 35,252.72 on volume of 247.367 million. In Latin America, Brazil's IBOVESPA fell sharply, losing 2,127.30 points, or 1.20 percent, to 175,739.08. Mexico's IPC MEXICO declined 523.02 points, or 0.79 percent, to 65,973.08 on volume of 124.716 million. Chile's S&P IPSA slipped 129.16 points, or 1.17 percent, to 10,927.71 on volume of 1.159 billion, while Argentina's MERVAL dropped 44,928.75 points, or 1.37 percent, to 3,235,294.75.
In Israel, the TA-125 fell 2.80 points, or 0.07 percent, to 4,004.34, while Egypt's EGX 30 Price Return Index rose 352.10 points, or 0.67 percent, to 52,608.30 on volume of 361.269 million. South Africa's Top 40 USD Net TRI Index dropped 53.15 points, or 0.79 percent.
Currency and Commodity Movers
In currency trading, the U.S. Dollar Index edged up 0.03 points, or 0.03 percent, to 101.27, trading between 101.26 and 101.32. The British Pound Currency Index fell 0.55 points, or 0.41 percent, to 133.47, while the Euro Currency Index declined 0.30 points, or 0.27 percent, to 113.85. The Japanese Yen Currency Index slipped 0.26 points, or 0.43 percent, to 61.57, and the Australian Dollar Currency Index dropped 0.34 points, or 0.49 percent, to 69.19.
The MSCI Europe index lost 5.73 points, or 0.21 percent, closing at 2,785.76. In China, the SSE Composite Index fell 82.37 points, or 2.06 percent, on volume of 3.256 billion, while Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 426.48 points, or 0.63 percent.
