Atlanta [US], July 16 (ANI): England head coach Thomas Tuchel is expected to continue in his role through UEFA Euro 2028 after reportedly retaining the backing of the Football Association (FA), despite the Three Lions' exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the semifinal stage, according to ESPN.
England's wait for a first major men's trophy since lifting the FIFA World Cup in 1966 continued after they suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against defending champions Argentina in the semifinal in Atlanta on Wednesday (local time).
Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute, but Argentina staged a late comeback as Enzo Fernandez equalised in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez scored a stoppage-time winner to send the defending champions into the final against Spain.
According to ESPN, the FA remains committed to Tuchel, whose contract was extended before the World Cup and now runs until 2028. The report added that the governing body wants the German coach to continue leading the team despite England falling short of their goal of winning the World Cup.
Following England's elimination, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham praised the efforts of the players, coaching staff and supporters while expressing disappointment over the result.
'It is heartbreaking to be so close,' FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said in a statement, as quoted by ESPN.
'The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament. I would like to thank them all and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home. We felt your support every step of the way and we are all so disappointed not to go further.'
England had looked on course to reach the final after taking the lead early in the second half through Anthony Gordon. The winger converted Morgan Rogers' cross in the 55th minute to put the Three Lions ahead following a closely contested opening half in which both sides battled for control in midfield and created limited clear-cut opportunities.
However, Argentina gradually gained control of the contest after England retreated into a more defensive shape. The defending champions increased the pressure, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford producing several important saves to keep England in front, while Alexis Mac Allister also struck the post as Argentina searched for an equaliser.
Argentina's persistence eventually paid off in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernandez found the back of the net after receiving a pass from captain Lionel Messi to restore parity.
The defending champions completed the comeback in stoppage time as Messi delivered a cross into the penalty area for Lautaro Martinez, who headed home the winning goal to send Argentina into the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
Despite England's late attempts to force extra time, Argentina held firm to secure a dramatic victory and keep alive their hopes of retaining the World Cup title. Argentina will now face Spain in the final, while England will take on France in the third-place playoff as they conclude their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. (ANI)
