Amazon trims AI workforce in latest round of job cuts

SAN FRANCISCO, California: Amazon has cut jobs in its artificial general intelligence (AGI) group, the latest in a series of smaller workforce reductions this year as the company continues to reshape its AI operations.

The layoffs, announced on July 22, follow a much larger round of cuts in January and come as major technology companies race to develop artificial general intelligence—AI systems designed to surpass human intelligence and learn, adapt and operate autonomously.

"We've been building large AI models for several years, and it remains one of the most important things we're working on," an Amazon spokesperson said. "We're sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers, so we can move faster on what counts. That focus means some difficult decisions, including eliminating some roles within parts of our AGI organization."

Amazon has been restructuring its AGI division since the departure of several senior executives. Rohit Prasad, who oversaw the company's AGI efforts, left at the end of last year, while David Luan, head of Amazon's AGI Lab, departed in February.

The company consolidated its AGI operations under Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis in December as part of a broader organization that also oversees silicon development and quantum computing.

Employees working under Adeeb Shanaa, vice president of artificial general intelligence data services, and Vishal Sharma, vice president of AGI information, reported being affected by the layoffs in online forums on July 22. The full extent of the job cuts, however, was not immediately known.

Amazon eliminated about 16,000 jobs across the company in January.
