NEW YORK, New York - U.S. stock markets surged across the board on Tuesday, with the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite outpacing its peers in a powerful rally that lifted all three major indexes to fresh gains, according to closing quotes.
Driving stocks was an announcement from the White House that a memorandum of agreement between the U.S. and Iran on ending the war was being circulated.
The Standard and Poor's 500 hit a new record high, jumping 136.00 points, or 1.79 percent, to close at 7,736.50. The broad-market index traded between a session low of 7,629.10 and a high of 7,758.21, continuing its steady climb from its 52-week trough of 6,289.37. Trading volume on the index reached 3.526 billion shares.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average also posted a robust advance, soaring 907.53 points, or 1.71 percent, to finish the day at 54,085.94. The blue-chip index moved within a range of 53,641.21 to 54,272.60, well above its yearly low of 43,799.20, with 559.153 million shares changing hands.

U.S. Dollar Mixed Tuesday as Greenback Gains on Yen and Loonie but Slips Against Euro, Pound, Franc and Aussie
The U.S. dollar ended Tuesday's trading session with a divided performance against major world currencies, advancing against the Japanese yen and the Canadian dollar while losing ground against the euro, British pound, Swiss franc, and Australian dollar, according to the latest foreign exchange quotes.
The dollar strengthened against the yen, with the USD-JPY pair rising to 157.79, marking a gain of 0.39 percent for the greenback. The U.S. currency also moved higher against its northern neighbor, as the USD-CAD pair climbed to 1.4065, an increase of 0.14 percent for the dollar against the Canadian loonie.
However, the dollar surrendered territory against the euro, with the EUR-USD pair advancing to 1.1531, representing a 0.19 percent gain for the common currency against the greenback. The British pound also posted gains versus the dollar, as GBP-USD rose to 1.3451, up 0.13 percent for the pound.
The Australian dollar had the strongest session among the major currencies tracked, with the AUD-USD pair jumping to 0.7048, a solid increase of 0.69 percent for the Aussie against its U.S. counterpart.
In Swiss trade, the dollar weakened slightly, with USD-CHF slipping to 0.8093, a decline of 0.11 percent for the greenback against the Swiss franc.
Traders cited a mix of shifting interest rate expectations and risk appetite as driving the divergent moves across the currency market, with the dollar finding support against the safe-haven yen and commodity-linked loonie while facing selling pressure against European and antipodean currencies.
Global Markets Close Mixed Tuesday as European Bourses Rally, Asian Indexes Drift Lower
World stock markets finished Tuesday's trading session with a distinctly transatlantic split, as strong gains in Europe were offset by losses in Asia and a solid showing in the United States.
