The U.S. 4100-meter mixed medley relay team set a world record late Wednesday at the Pan Pacific Championships, breaking the record achieved by an American team two years ago.
At the meet in Irvine, Calif., Will Modglin swam the backstroke, Van Mathias the breaststroke, Gretchen Walsh butterfly and Kate Douglass the freestyle. They finished in a time of 3 minutes, 36.70 seconds.
Walsh was part of the U.S. team that set the record at the 2024 Paris Olympics in 3:37.43. She was joined by Ryan Murphy, Nicolas Fink and Torri Huske in that quartet.
Australia and Canada won the silver and bronze medals, respectively, on Wednesday.
At the world championships in 2025, the United States did not qualify for the mixed medley final.
Entering the Pan Pacific meet, Walsh and Douglass both were multiple world-record holders. It's the only world record for Modglin and Mathias, neither of whom were on the Olympic team in 2024.
Modglin, in his first go-round in major international competitions, said after the race that he was 'still a little speechless.'
'You watch Kate and Gretchen. They've been doing this for a while now. I think just being on a relay with them is such an honor.'
It was the second medal of the day for all four swimmers. Mathias (50-meter butterfly) and Modglin (100-meter backstroke) won silver medals. In the 50-meter butterfly, Walsh won gold and Douglass took the silver medal.
