KYIV, Ukraine: At least twelve people were killed, and many more were injured after Russia launched another series of air attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region on September 1, Ukrainian authorities said.
The attacks marked the sixth day in a row of Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital.
The latest attacks came as fighting continued on both sides of the Russia-Ukraine border. Diplomatic efforts are also continuing to find a way to end the war, which began when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The conflict has become the deadliest war in Europe since World War II.
Ukraine's emergency services said twelve people were killed and five others injured in Kyiv. Three of those injured were children. Several fires were reported at different locations across the capital following the attacks.
In Boryspil, a city in the Kyiv region, one person was killed, and nine others were injured, including a child, according to regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko. Russian missiles and drones damaged an apartment building and a business facility in the area.
The repeated attacks on Kyiv and nearby areas have disrupted daily life for millions of people. Air raid warnings were issued across large parts of Ukraine during the early hours of Tuesday as residents were urged to take shelter.
Russia has also stepped up attacks on Ukrainian border areas, as well as energy and transport facilities. One of Tuesday's strikes affected a border crossing at Orlivka on the Danube River, temporarily stopping crossings into Romania. Romania is a member of both the European Union and NATO.
Ukraine has faced growing pressure on its export infrastructure, particularly around the southern Odesa region. Russian forces have increasingly targeted ports, transport links and other facilities used to move Ukrainian goods.
The violence has also spilled into Russian territory. A Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire in the port area of Ust-Luga in northwestern Russia. Ust-Luga is an important center for Russian exports. Russian authorities also reported that Moscow's air defenses were responding to drone attacks.
In Russia's Samara region, about 800 kilometers southeast of Moscow, an air attack damaged civilian facilities, according to the regional governor. The area is home to several major oil refineries.
At the diplomatic level, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he had a "detailed and constructive" telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump's representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Zelenskiy said discussions were continuing over dates for their planned visit to Ukraine, which is expected to focus on efforts to advance peace negotiations.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin and said the war needed to end for the sake of humanity. Putin said Moscow was continuing to move in that direction.
