The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reappointed Carlos Queiroz as the national side's head coach less than two months after the 73-year-old appeared to step down from the role following the team's exit from the World Cup.

Queiroz took over the Black Stars in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo, and led them to the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup. After Ghana was eliminated by Colombia 1-0 in July, Queiroz posted on social media that he was leaving his brief journey with Ghana with 'pride.'

However, the GFA confirmed on Thursday that Queiroz is returning to the post beginning with this month's international window.

'Queiroz's previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, concluded a few weeks ago. Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window,' the Ghana Football Association said in a statement.

'The GFA believes Queiroz's extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter.'

Ghana will play Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying matches against the Ivory Coast on Sept. 23 and Gambia on Sept. 27. They will also play two matches against Somalia on Nov. 11 and Nov. 15.

Queiroz also has World Cup head coaching experience with Iran in 2014, 2018 and 2022, as well as with Portugal in 2010. A Portuguese national who was born in Mozambique, Queiroz led Portugal to the Round of 16 in the 2010 event at South Africa, where it lost to Spain.

A coach for nearly four decades, Queiroz also had head coaching stops with the national teams of the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman. At the club level, he was head coach at Sporting CP in Portugal, the New York/New Jersey Metrostars in MLS and Real Madrid in Spain.

Queiroz was the assistant manager under Alex Ferguson for two stints at Manchester United of the English Premier League from 2002-2003 and again from 2004-2008.
