New Delhi [India], September 7 (ANI): Indian automobile retail recorded its biggest-ever August as alternative fuels overtook petrol in the passenger vehicle segment for the first time in history, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Total vehicle retail registrations reached 24,23,201 units in August 2026, marking a 17.51 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period last year. Retails, however, slipped 6.48 per cent month-on-month due to seasonal monsoon patterns and calendar shifts that moved festival buying into September.

FADA President Sai Giridhar identified the historic shift in passenger vehicle powertrains as the defining element of the performance.

'The defining development of the month, however, was a structural one: for the first time in India's history, alternative fuels - CNG, hybrid and electric combined - overtook petrol in the Passenger Vehicle market, at 41.95% against petrol's 40.85%,' Giridhar said.

'A little over a year ago petrol led this contest by nearly eleven percentage points; that lead has now been erased,' he added.

Segment details show CNG captured 25.28 per cent, hybrids secured 9.04 per cent, and electric vehicles accounted for 7.63 per cent of the passenger vehicle market. Dealers noted that running costs and buyer hesitation regarding the E20 transition directed demand toward alternative fuel options, even as petrol remained the largest standalone fuel category. 

Total passenger vehicle retail reached 4,02,398 units, registering a 16.14 per cent growth year-on-year to cross the four-lakh milestone for any August.

Category-wide performance showed two-wheeler registrations standing at 17,14,610 units, up 19.69 per cent year-on-year. Commercial vehicles grew 14.45 per cent to 90,769 units. Wheeled construction equipment surged 31.45 per cent to 5,166 units, while three-wheelers rose 8.64 per cent to 1,22,281 units. Tractors remained flat with 0.84 per cent growth at 87,977 units, declining 25.03 per cent month-on-month amid a 13 per cent monsoon deficit across 14 states.

Giridhar noted that rural registrations outpaced urban centres across non-farm categories, indicating broad changes in rural consumption trends.

'Rural demand, in other words, has begun to decouple from the monsoon - the farm-income-linked segment softened, yet the non-farm rural economy of livelihood mobility, goods movement and construction kept accelerating,' Giridhar said.

'For an industry long accustomed to reading rural India through the rainfall map, that is the quiet structural marker of FY27, and a measure of how broad-based Bharat's consumption has become,' he said.

Rural passenger vehicle sales expanded 24.99 per cent compared to 10.93 per cent in urban regions. Across the broader market, total electric vehicle sales reached 2,98,448 units, taking overall electric penetration to 12.3 per cent.

Inventory levels in passenger vehicles expanded by five days over July to reach 38 to 40 days, well above the recommended 21-day mark. FADA cautioned that showroom conversion during the September-to-November festive window will determine seasonal stability as dealerships navigate elevated stock levels and scheduled vehicle price revisions.
