Oslo [Norway], September 8 (ANI): European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled a 200-million-euro investment package for Greenland during an official visit to Nuuk, designed to bolster cooperation between the European Union and the territory.

According to a press release issued by the European Commission, the Global Gateway Partnership Package is slated to support investments across Greenland throughout 2026 and 2027.

Formal proceedings in Nuuk on Monday (local time) saw von der Leyen, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen execute a joint declaration to reinforce their partnership.

Following the signing ceremony, von der Leyen shared her perspective on X.

"It reflects a clear choice by Greenland to strengthen ties with the EU. In order to protect its values, freedom and interests. Europe is making a choice too: To be more present and more engaged in Greenland and in the Arctic," von der Leyen stated on X.

Official statements indicate the agreement and accompanying capital allocation will broaden cooperation across educational sectors and fisheries, alongside backing for satellite and cable connectivity, hydropower generation, and critical raw materials.

Additional provisions within the funding package target support for better housing, sustainable tourism, and small businesses.

Characterising the territory as a reliable partner, von der Leyen addressed the release announcement directly.

"Greenland can count on the EU," von der Leyen remarked in the release, further describing Greenland as "a strategic ally and a trusted friend."

The European Commission President added that the funding framework would create new opportunities and strengthen the EU's presence and engagement in Greenland and the Arctic.

As an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland has recently drawn heightened international attention. US President Donald Trump's repeated remarks concerning American control over the island have triggered apprehension among European allies, reigniting debates over Arctic security, sovereignty, and NATO cohesion.
