NEW YORK, New York - U.S. stock markets were weaker at the close on Tuesday after the bond rout that has gripped financial markets globally in recent weeks deepened. The 30-year U.S. Treasury hit 5.59 per cent on Tuesday, the highest level since 2002.
The Standard and Poor's 500 closed at 7,671.18, down 12.51 points, a decline of 0.16 percent, on volume of 2.658B. The index traded between a low of 7,653.55 and a high of 7,699.60, against a 52-week range of 6,316.91 to 7,816.70.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 130.52 points to 51,350.99, a loss of 0.25 percent, on volume of 374.923M. It moved between 51,129.18 and 51,505.19 during the session, within a yearly range of 45,057.28 to 54,744.33.
The NASDAQ Composite slipped 22.84 points to 26,797.54, down 0.09 percent, on volume of 5.322B. The tech-heavy index traded between 26,717.95 and 26,919.73, against a 52-week range of 20,690.25 to 27,288.79.
The session reflected a broadly quiet but negative tone across, with the Dow posting the steepest percentage decline among the major U.S. indexes, followed by the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq.
U.S. Dollar Strengthens Broadly as All Major Currencies Retreat
The U.S. dollar advanced against every major currency on Wednesday, as the euro, British pound, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, Canadian dollar and Swiss franc all weakened.
The EUR-USD pair fell 0.30 percent to 1.1337, as the euro slid against the dollar.
The USD-JPY pair rose 0.06 percent to 157.30, with the dollar gaining on the yen.
The GBP-USD pair dropped 0.21 percent to 1.3227, as the pound declined against the greenback.
The AUD-USD pair fell 0.46 percent to 0.6986, marking the largest decline among the major pairs as the Australian dollar retreated. This despite the Reserve Bank of Australia hiking official interest rates by 0.25 percent to 4.60 percent on Tuesday.
The USD-CAD pair rose 0.08 percent to 1.4186, with the dollar advancing against the Canadian dollar.
The USD-CHF pair climbed 0.23 percent to 0.8340, as the dollar strengthened against the Swiss franc.
Overall, the session reflected broad-based dollar strength, with the Australian dollar suffering the steepest loss, followed by the euro, Swiss franc, pound, Canadian dollar and yen.
Global Markets End Mixed as European Indexes Diverge and Asia Retreats
World stock markets closed with a mixed performance on Wednesday, as European benchmarks diverged while most Asian indexes finished lower.
In Canada, the S&P/TSX Composite index closed at 35,460.27, down 29.59 points or 0.08 percent, on volume of 233.425M. It traded between 35,305.72 and 35,550.06 during the day.
In London, the FTSE 100 closed at 10,636.71, down 48.17 points, a decline of 0.45 percent. The session saw the index trade between a low of 10,622.00 and a high of 10,756.15, against a 52-week range of 9,266.30 to 10,989.50.
On the European continent, Germany's DAX P bucked the downward trend, gaining 24.79 points to close at 25,399.21, a rise of 0.10 percent. The index moved between 25,338.03 and 25,617.31 during the day, well within its yearly range of 21,863.81 to 26,618.74.
In Paris, the CAC 40 slipped 42.61 points to 8,035.87, a loss of 0.53 percent. It traded between 8,023.98 and 8,107.28, against a 52-week range of 7,505.27 to 8,755.03.
The EURO STOXX 50 I rose 18.98 points to 6,320.26, up 0.30 percent, after fluctuating between 6,307.00 and 6,365.40. Its yearly range stands at 5,376.81 to 6,577.20.
The Euronext 100 Index edged up 0.27 points to 1,897.63, a gain of 0.01 percent. It moved between 1,896.02 and 1,909.42, within a 52-week range of 1,643.41 to 1,984.60.
Brussels' BEL 20 fell 38.08 points to 5,647.29, down 0.67 percent. The index traded between 5,637.55 and 5,708.99, against a yearly range of 4,761.67 to 5,905.83.
In Asia, Hong Kong's HANG SENG INDEX closed at 24,523.57, down 118.94 points or 0.48 percent. It traded between 24,444.15 and 24,648.64, within a 52-week range of 22,518.00 to 28,056.10.
In mainland China, the SSE Composite Index added 6.83 points to close at 3,830.45, up 0.18 percent, on volume of 1.293B. It traded between 3,810.81 and 3,843.84, against a 52-week range of 3,741.11 to 4,258.86.
Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 396.35 points to 65,481.27, down 0.60 percent. The index moved between 64,699.49 and 65,805.08, within a yearly range of 44,357.65 to 72,831.73.
Singapore's STI Index fell 14.18 points to 5,714.84, a decline of 0.25 percent. The index moved between 5,696.72 and 5,740.60, against a yearly range of 4,272.48 to 5,828.50.
In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 [XJO] gained 29.60 points to close at 8,709.30, up 0.34 percent. It traded between 8,661.00 and 8,709.30, within a 52-week range of 8,262.40 to 9,296.70.
The broader ALL ORDINARIES [XAO] rose 35.90 points to 8,886.60, a gain of 0.41 percent. It moved between 8,837.80 and 8,886.60, against a yearly range of 8,454.90 to 9,474.80.
In New Zealand Tuesday, the S&P/NZX 50 INDEX GROSS fell 147.05 points to 13,683.63, a drop of 1.06 percent. It moved between 13,681.76 and 13,830.68, against a yearly range of 12,689.78 to 14,069.22.
India's S&P BSE SENSEX dropped 242.65 points to 72,529.07, down 0.33 percent. The index traded between 72,064.00 and 72,684.90, within a 52-week range of 71,545.81 to 86,159.02.
Indonesia's IDX COMPOSITE fell 26.16 points to 6,121.70, a loss of 0.43 percent. It moved between 6,013.08 and 6,150.55, against a yearly range of 5,317.91 to 9,174.47.
Malaysia's FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI declined 26.06 points to 1,643.96, down 1.56 percent. It traded between 1,643.36 and 1,665.32, within a 52-week range of 1,597.68 to 1,771.25.
South Korea's KOSPI Composite Index slipped 18.93 points to 6,870.81, down 0.27 percent. Its 52-week high stands at 9,385.59.
Taiwan's TSEC CAPITALIZATION WEIGHTED ST dropped 392.64 points to 47,631.96, a decline of 0.82 percent. It traded between 47,573.09 and 48,045.13, within a yearly range of 25,738.31 to 48,601.53.
Israel's TA-125 gained 7.06 points to 4,084.27, up 0.17 percent. It moved between 4,077.61 and 4,118.46, against a 52-week range of 3,178.94 to 4,588.51.
Egypt's EGX 30 Price Return Index fell 171.60 points to 52,297.10, down 0.33 percent, on volume of 163.622M. It traded between 52,202.70 and 52,996.50, matching its 52-week range of 52,202.70 to 52,996.50.
South Africa's Top 40 USD Net TRI Index rose 34.72 points to 6,655.94, a gain of 0.52 percent. It moved between 6,624.38 and 6,716.93, within a yearly range of 6,105.70 to 8,184.71.
