It is a good time to reflect.
Car horns blared across Baghdad on Wednesday. Convoys rolled through city squares. Iraq declared the end of the U.S.-led coalition's mission against the Islamic State (IS). For Iraq, it's a new beginning. For Washington, a moment to reckon with its addiction to military intervention.
The U.S. invaded in 2003, promising freedom and stability after Saddam Hussein. But what it delivered was years of turmoil that plunged the country deeper into chaos.
After more than two decades of war, upheaval, and foreign meddling, Iraqis know no nation thrives on a leash. The only way forward is on their own feet.
The withdrawal hardly ends U.S. interventionism in the Middle East -- a policy that often fuels the very instability it claims to fight.
