WASHINGTON, D.C.: More than 20 million Americans enrolled in Medicare are set to receive a one-time US$90 payment from the U.S. government to help cover their monthly medical insurance premiums, President Donald Trump said.
Trump said on social media late on October 2 that the payments would come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which he said Congress gave $2 billion to improve the Medicare fee-for-service program.
The White House said most eligible seniors would receive the $90 payment by direct deposit in early October. Those without direct deposit will receive a check sent to the mailing address they have registered with Medicare, also in early October.
The announcement is the latest in a series of financial promises Trump has made to voters ahead of November's midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress.
Trump's Republican Party currently holds narrow majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives. His approval rating has been low over his handling of the high cost of living for Americans during the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, which has driven up oil and gas prices.
Last month, Trump proposed sending $5,000 checks to all adult U.S. citizens if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the midterms. Analysts, economists, and some Republicans in Congress reacted skeptically to the proposal.
The Trump administration is separately sending $500 payments to nearly one million Americans in a move that strategists say could potentially influence some election races.
The White House says those payments are refunds for what it describes as excessive fees charged to people who purchased health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.
