PERTH, Western Australia - Legendary broadcasting pioneer George Chapman has officially launched his highly anticipated memoir, The Boy from Boyanup, marking a milestone celebration that coincided with his 90th birthday.
The book, which chronicles Chapman's extraordinary rise from a small-town boy to one of the most influential executives in Australian and Asian media, was unveiled before a star-studded room of industry veterans, family, and friends in Perth, Western Australia, on Saturday.
From Humble Beginnings to the Airwaves
The Boy from Boyanup details an incredible journey of resilience. After losing his father at just eight years old, Chapman left school to enter the workforce at age 14.
His entry into broadcasting began at Perth's 6PM, where he worked as a panel operator. His natural talent quickly caught the industry's attention, landing him a cadet announcer role at 6VA Albany.
Upon returning to 6PM, Chapman's sharp programming instincts led to a rapid executive rise:
Conquering Television and the Packer Era
Chapman's radio success translated seamlessly to television when he was appointed Program Manager at HSV Channel 7 in Melbourne.
However, his return to radio set the stage for his ultimate executive triumphs. Poached by the Packer radio network—which had recently acquired the Whitford Broadcasting Network in Western Australia—Chapman was named General Manager (the era's equivalent of CEO). Under his leadership, he drove Perth's Radio 6PM to the number-one spot, a dominant position the station held for decades. His unmatched track record caught the eye of media tycoon Sir Frank Packer himself.
In a career-defining move, Packer handpicked Chapman as CEO of his flagship television station, TCN Channel 9 in Sydney, where Chapman steered the network through several highly successful years, during which Sir Frank Packer died and was succeeded by his son, Kerry. Chapman assembled the team that took Channel 9 through its Golden Age, before handing the reins to his deputy Sam Chisholm.
A Global Media Legacy
Beyond his massive footprint in Australia, The Boy from Boyanup highlights Chapman's pioneering media ventures across Asia. The memoir details his extensive work expanding and shaping television and radio landscapes in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, cementing his status as an international media trailblazer.
Now, at 90, Chapman's memoir offers an unprecedented, firsthand look at the golden age of Australian broadcasting through the eyes of a man who didn't just witness history—he made it.
