KYIV, Ukraine: Ukraine has resumed attacks on Russian oil refineries after accusing Moscow of continuing strikes on its energy infrastructure, despite a ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The move came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Washington for what he described as a dangerous reduction in intelligence support.
The governor of Russia's Ryazan region said on October 15 that a Ukrainian drone attack had caused a fire at a major oil refinery.
Since Trump unexpectedly announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on October 11, Kyiv had held back from attacking Russian refineries. Trump blamed such attacks for higher diesel prices on global markets.
However, Zelenskyy became increasingly frustrated by Russia's continued attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. On October 14, he said Russian strikes had left 600,000 people without electricity.
The Ukrainian president warned that Kyiv would not continue to suspend its attacks indefinitely if Moscow did not stop its own strikes. He also accused Trump of showing favoritism towards Russia.
In an interview with the Financial Times published on October 15, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had run out of patience.
"The block (on attacking refineries) is out. We're done," he told the newspaper.
Pavel Malkov, governor of the Ryazan region, said a major Ukrainian drone attack had caused a fire at an oil refinery. He added that emergency services were on site and officials were assessing the damage.
Zelenskyy also criticized Washington's willingness to pursue business deals with Moscow and Trump's apparent admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Dispute over US Intelligence, Starlink
Despite suspending attacks on Russian refineries, Ukrainian officials complained that they had not received U.S. early-warning alerts about incoming Russian ballistic missiles in recent days.
They also reported that the military version of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite communications service had been slowed across Ukraine. The disruption was said to have affected Ukrainian forces operating near the front lines and their ability to carry out medium-range strikes against Russian military targets.
Musk said in a post on X on October 14 that Starshield, the military version of Starlink, was owned and controlled by the U.S. government. He said Washington would decide whether to impose speed restrictions.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian military officials had been warned by their U.S. counterparts that Washington would cut intelligence support unless Kyiv stopped attacking Russian energy infrastructure.
In his interview with the Financial Times, Zelenskyy said U.S. officials had presented the suspension of support to Ukraine as a technical problem. However, he rejected the explanation that Starlink difficulties were caused by a system failure.
"It was not a technical problem; it was the will," he told the newspaper.
Zelenskyy was also asked whether Ukraine would agree to stop attacking energy facilities to improve relations with the White House.
He said he would consider such a move only if the United States supplied Ukraine with additional Patriot air defense interceptors.
