Washington DC [US], November 4 (ANI): US stock futures on Wednesday declined sharply as early election results pointed towards a potentially strong performance by Democrats, raising concerns among investors about possible policy changes and their impact on technology investments, particularly the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.
Dow Jones futures fell 400 points, or 0.8 per cent, while S&P 500 futures declined 1 per cent and Nasdaq futures dropped 2 per cent amid concerns about potential roadblocks to the AI boom.
The market reaction was particularly linked to 'Democrats' unexpectedly strong performance in Texas, including their victory in the state's governor race, which raised concerns about possible obstacles to the construction of data centres that form a key part of the AI industry.
The developments have put technology investments under focus, as investors assess whether the election outcome could create challenges for companies planning large-scale data centre projects.
'The Texas blue tsunami is a gut punch to any tech investor on the datacenter issue,' Dan Ives, partner and senior managing director at Yorkville Ives, told CNN.
The report also highlighted concerns among investors about the broader implications of changes in congressional control and the direction of US policy.
'Political uncertainty often contributes to near-term market volatility, particularly as investors assess potential changes in congressional control and the direction of policy,' Keith Lerner, chief markets strategist at Truist Advisory Services, told CNN.
However, the fall in futures does not necessarily indicate how equities will perform in subsequent trading sessions. The CNN report noted that when Donald Trump won the US presidential election in November 2016, stock futures declined sharply, but equities ended the following trading day significantly higher.
The report also pointed out that the broader US stock market has recorded annual gains in 15 of the past 20 years, performing well under both Democratic and Republican-controlled Congresses.
Meanwhile, in the latest closing session on Tuesday, US equity benchmarks ended in positive territory. The S&P 500 index closed at 7,569, gaining 0.3 per cent, while the Nasdaq advanced 0.83 per cent to close at 25,372.
Investors are closely assessing the potential implications of the election results for technology companies and data centre investments, amid concerns that political developments could affect the pace of expansion in the AI sector. (ANI)
