WASHINGTON, D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 75th birthday, a symbolic gesture that comes at a sensitive moment in India-U.S. relations.
The call, which both leaders later described in warm terms, coincided with the arrival of American negotiators in New Delhi for fresh trade talks aimed at resolving disputes over tariffs and market access.
Trump, speaking to reporters in Washington, called the exchange a "wonderful" conversation with his "friend." During the conversation, he conveyed birthday greetings and expressed appreciation for Modi's support for efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Modi, in turn, thanked Trump publicly in a post on X, noting that both leaders remained committed to elevating the India-U.S. Comprehensive and Global Partnership. "We support your initiatives towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict," the Prime Minister added, signaling alignment on a critical international issue.
The cordial messages stand in sharp contrast to the strains that have defined recent months in bilateral ties. Washington and New Delhi have been at odds since Trump imposed steep tariffs—reportedly as high as 50 percent—on a range of Indian goods, sparking political backlash in India and concern among exporters.
At the same time, the U.S. has criticized India for continuing to purchase Russian oil, arguing that such transactions indirectly help finance Moscow's war machine. Yet, despite such policy disagreements, Trump has consistently stopped short of personal criticism of Modi, instead emphasizing his friendship with the Indian leader.
Analysts say the timing of Trump's outreach is no coincidence. The call comes as U.S. trade officials are in New Delhi for discussions aimed at narrowing differences on tariffs and unlocking greater market access on both sides. With Washington eager to deepen economic ties in Asia and New Delhi seeking to shield its exporters from punitive duties, the personal rapport between Trump and Modi could play a decisive role in breaking the deadlock.
For Modi, the call offers political dividends as well. He has long described the United States as a "close friend" and "natural partner" of India. Trump's public affirmation of their bond provides a valuable counterpoint to critics who argue that India's foreign policy balancing act between Russia and the West risks isolating New Delhi.
Whether the goodwill generated by the birthday exchange translates into tangible breakthroughs remains uncertain. Still, the conversation underscores how personal diplomacy continues to shape one of the world's most consequential bilateral relationships, even amid trade frictions and global geopolitical challenges.
