JERUSALEM, Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel backed the U.S. ceasefire with Iran, but tnsisted it does not cover fighting in Lebanon.
Netanyahu came under fire following the announcement of the ceasefire. "Netanyahu led us to a strategic collapse. There was here a disgraceful combination of arrogance, irresponsibility, negligent staff work, lies sold to the Americans that damaged the trust between the countries. A military success that turned into a diplomatic disaster," Opposition Leader Yair Lapid posted on X Wednesday.
"Israel had no influence whatsoever on the agreement signed tonight between the United States and Iran. Netanyahu turned us into a protectorate state that receives instructions over the phone on matters concerning the core of our national security," Lapid said..
Israel's army chief, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, said Israel will keep taking every chance it gets to attack Lebanon The military said it hit more than 100 targets across Lebanon in just 10 minutes on Wednesday, the largest scale of strikes since March 1.
"The scale of the killing and destruction in Lebanon today is nothing short of horrific," UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk said in a statement Wednesday. "Such carnage, within hours of agreeing to a ceasefire with Iran, defies belief. It places enormous pressure on a fragile peace, which is so desperately needed by civilians."
In the malicious series of attacks, mainly on the capital, Beirut, the Israeli military killed 254 people and wounded 1,165, according to Lebanese health authorities.
People in Beirut heard loud explosions, and smoke was seen rising from different places, but it was not clear what exactly was hit.
Hezbollah has not said if it will follow the ceasefire. The group said it is open to talks, but an unnamed official said it will not stop attacking Israel unless Israel also stops.
Pakistan, which brokered the Iran ceasefire insisted it included all other areas including Gaza and Lebanon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu however refuted this, saying Lebanon wa snot included.
"The IDF completed a wide-scale wave of strikes targeting Hezbollah command centers and military sites in Beirut, Beqaa, and southern Lebanon," the Israeli military said in a statement Wednesday.
"Most of the infrastructure that was struck was located within the heart of the civilian population, as part of Hezbollah's cynical exploitation of Lebanese civilians as human shields in order to safeguard its operations," the statement said.
Israeli military spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said the large attack happened because Hezbollah is spreading its activities into civilian areas.
He said the group is moving its operations to areas with more civilians and is no longer staying mainly in its usual strongholds, such as southern Lebanon or the Dahiyeh area of Beirut. Instead, it is also operating in busy parts of the city, including central Beirut.
The military said the operation involved 50 fighter jets that fired 160 weapons at 100 targets in just 10 minutes, causing panic across Beirut during rush hour.
Prior to Wednesday, 1,530 people have been killed including 130 children since Israel widened its Iran attacks to include Lebanon, after Hezbollah launched rockets at the Jewish state in retaliation for the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader.
