SEATTLE, Washington: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised concerns with senior Trump administration officials about security risks linked to Anthropic's most advanced artificial intelligence models before the U.S. government imposed new restrictions on the technology, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The disclosure comes as the Trump administration moves to limit access to Anthropic's latest AI systems, citing national security concerns.
According to the source, Jassy was among technology leaders who discussed potential risks associated with Anthropic's advanced models during meetings with senior administration officials this week.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Trump administration directed Anthropic to block all foreign nationals, whether located inside or outside the United States, from using its latest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
Anthropic said it would disable access to the models globally in response to the government order.
In a blog post, Anthropic said the U.S. government believes there is a method of bypassing, or "jailbreaking," a safeguard designed to prevent Fable 5 from being used to identify software vulnerabilities.
Anthropic said the restrictions were imposed through an export control order.
The U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security, which oversees export controls, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The government's move has drawn criticism from some experts who support export controls on advanced AI technologies but questioned the scope of the restrictions.
"This was not well thought-out," said Jimmy Goodrich, a senior fellow at the University of California's Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation.
"It even bans Canadians and Brits employed at Anthropic from doing research and development."
The restrictions affect users in allied countries as well as those in nations viewed as strategic competitors, raising questions about how the measures will be implemented and whether they could affect international AI research and development efforts.
The order also comes at a sensitive time for Anthropic, which has confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering.
It was reported that tensions between Anthropic and parts of the Trump administration had recently shown signs of easing before the latest action was announced.
Anthropic has not provided additional details about the alleged vulnerability cited by the government or how long the restrictions may remain in place.
The company is one of the world's leading AI developers and is best known for its Claude family of AI models, which compete with offerings from OpenAI, Google and other major technology firms.
