MOSCOW, Russia: Moscow authorities said that dozens of drones were shot down early on Monday, and flights at airports were briefly stopped, just days after Ukraine again struck the city's oil refinery.
Ukrainian officials said Russian drones hit civilian cargo ships, killing an Egyptian crew member. They also said that drone attacks in other areas killed at least five people, including three people from the same family in Ukraine's northern Sumy region.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that nearly 60 drones heading toward the city were destroyed. He added that emergency services were sent to the places where the drones were brought down, but did not give more details.
Russia's aviation authority said that flights at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovskiy airports were temporarily stopped but later resumed.
Local news agencies, quoting the defense ministry, said Russian air defense systems shot down a total of 301 drones overnight, including in areas of Ukraine controlled by Russia.
These latest attacks came after drones struck Moscow's only oil refinery again last week, in one of the largest air attacks on the city since Russia launched its full invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In Ukraine's Sumy region, a drone attack killed a 13-year-old boy, his 36-year-old father, and his 73-year-old grandmother. The boy's mother and two siblings were injured, according to regional prosecutors.
In the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, a woman was killed, and three others were injured in a drone strike, local governor Ivan Fedorov said on Telegram on June 21.
Russia also attacked the southern Odesa region with an Iskander ballistic missile on the evening of June 21, killing one person and injuring three others, regional governor Oleh Kiper said on Telegram. He said the strike hit an agricultural site, setting vehicles and fuel storage tanks on fire.
In Sevastopol, in Russian-controlled Crimea, authorities canceled all outdoor public events on Monday and said streetlights would be turned off. Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev urged people to reduce electricity use.
Crimea, a popular tourist place for Russians, has stopped selling fuel to the public and businesses. Supplies are now limited to government agencies handling essential services and security, after Ukrainian drone attacks on supply routes and energy facilities caused a fuel shortage.
Ukraine's navy said Russian drones hit a Turkish cargo ship named Victress, which was sailing under a Panamanian flag. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said a 58-year-old Egyptian cook was killed, and eight crew members, including Turkish and Indian nationals, had to escape using a lifeboat.
Kuleba said the ship was badly damaged. According to LSEG data, the ship is operated by Turkey's Rana Denizcilik, which could not immediately be contacted for comment.
Kuleba also said that ships flying the flags of Palau and Belize were attacked overnight, but no one was injured, and they continued their journey.
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine's sea export routes, attacking ships and ports that are important for foreign trade and the wartime economy.
