DHAKA, Bangladesh: On June 22, Bangladesh ordered troops to be deployed in Dhaka and five other districts until June 30, as authorities increased security ahead of the founding anniversary of the Awami League, the political party of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
This decision came just a week after the army ended its nationwide duties on June 15, concluding nearly two years of operations that began following a student-led uprising that forced Hasina out of power in August 2024.
Officials said security was tightened because of fears that supporters of the former ruling party might try to hold gatherings or protests to mark the anniversary, even though the party's activities are banned.
An interim government first introduced these restrictions that remain in place under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who took office after the February elections.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed told reporters that supporters were trying to create unrest through rallies and marches in different districts. He said law enforcement agencies had been told to remain on high alert to prevent trouble.
He also said the army was deployed in Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Faridpur, and Gopalganj based on specific intelligence to prevent sabotage and assist the civilian administration.
Hasina fled to neighboring India during the political crisis in 2024 and has stayed there since. In November 2025, a national war crimes tribunal sentenced her to death in her absence over her government's crackdown on protesters, a decision she has rejected as politically motivated.
Once the oldest and most powerful political party in Bangladesh, the Awami League has weakened since losing power. Many of its senior leaders have been arrested, are under investigation, or have left the country, showing that political tensions remain as the new government tries to keep stability after one of the country's most difficult periods in decades.
