As Bulgaria approaches the end of the transition period for euro cash exchange, citizens have only a few days left to convert levs into euros free of charge at commercial banks and selected branches of Bulgarian Posts, before fees are introduced.
The deadline expires on June 30, 2026, with exchanges carried out at the fixed rate of 1.95583 levs per euro. From July 1 onward, banks and post offices will be allowed to apply commissions for currency conversion services. The Bulgarian National Bank will continue to offer free exchange without limits or deadlines.
The timing coincides with the peak summer travel season, raising practical questions for travelers as Bulgaria now uses the euro domestically but citizens still travel frequently outside the eurozone.
Market data from exchange operator Tavex indicates continued demand for foreign currencies, including the Turkish lira, Hungarian forint, Polish zloty, Czech koruna, Bosnian convertible mark, Serbian dinar, and Chinese yuan. Demand levels remain broadly unchanged compared to last year, suggesting stable travel behavior despite the currency transition.
Financial experts note that euro adoption does not eliminate the need for currency planning when traveling outside the euro area. ?The introduction of the euro does not mean that Bulgarians stop thinking in currencies. On the contrary - the summer season shows that when people travel outside the eurozone, they continue to orient themselves towards the local currency of the country they are going to,? said Max Baklayan.
Tavex also reports rising interest in the Czech koruna, reflecting strong demand for trips to Prague and other Czech destinations, particularly during a busy season of cultural events and concerts.
The situation highlights ongoing practical considerations for travelers, including whether it is more cost-effective to carry euros, exchange for local currencies in advance, or rely on card payments abroad. It also raises questions about hidden fees when paying by card and the advantages of selecting local currency when withdrawing or paying at terminals abroad.
Despite the euro's introduction in Bulgaria, foreign travel patterns suggest that currency choice remains an important part of financial planning, especially for destinations outside the eurozone.
