LONDON, UK - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced he will step down.
Starmer has been under increasing pressure and finally succumbed on Monday. He will continue as prime minister until his successor is chosen.
Starmer will not only relinquish the prime ministership, but also the leadership of the Labour Party.
The Labour Party's National Executive Committee is expected to call for nominations on 9 July 2026, with nominations closing on 16 July 2026.
With parliament returning on 1 September 2026, the new leader will likely be in place by then.
Starmer's resignation comes just two years after he led his party to a landslide election win.
"I shall spend more time on the most important job. Being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic... and being best dad I can to my beautiful children, who have been my pride and joy," Starmer said in his resignation speech to a packed press conference outside 10 Downing Street on Monday.
"Every decision I have taken is about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign," he said.
