MEXICO CITY, Mexico: Mexican officials say that human remains found in the eastern state of Veracruz are those of kidnapped journalist Roxana Guzman. They say that eight people, including 4 police officers, have been arrested for the crime.
Her killing has once again drawn serious attention to press freedom in Mexico, which is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists.
Guzman, who led the crime news outlet Pulso Informativo del Sureste, was kidnapped from her home on June 2. Armed men wearing masks broke down her front door and took her away. A video of the attack was widely shared on social media.
Local media reported that after killing Guzman, the attackers tried to destroy her body by placing it in drums filled with fuel. Later, authorities found skeletal remains at the site.
In a statement, the Veracruz state prosecutor's office said that forensic tests had completed the identification process and scientifically confirmed that the remains belonged to the journalist.
The four local police officers arrested are from Ixhuatlan del Sureste, a small town about 300 kilometers (186 miles) south of Veracruz city.
Prosecutors said these officers are suspected of giving resources, food, and logistical help to the criminal group involved in the crime.
According to the rights group Article 19, two other journalists have been killed this year because of their work. The group also said that 10 journalists have been killed since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, highlighting Mexico's reputation as one of the most dangerous places in the world for the press.
