Tyrod Taylor brings experience to Packers quarterback room

Signed days after the 2026 NFL Draft, Taylor fills a vacancy in the quarterback room after two-year backup Malik Willis left in March to become the Miami Dolphins' new starting QB.

An NFL career with humble origins has seen Taylor develop from a former sixth-round pick to the only QB in league history with at least 10,000 passing yards, 2,000 rushing yards, 70 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing TDs with fewer than 35 interceptions.

The 6-foot-1, 219-pound quarterbackbrings 100 games of NFL experience to Green Bay, including 62 starts. In addition to a three-year stint as Buffalo's starting quarterback, Taylor has seconded Joe Flacco, Baker Mayfield, Justin Herbert, Deshaun Watson, Daniel Jones and Aaron Rodgers Love's mentor during his first three seasons in Green Bay.

The No. 2 job has held significant importance for the Packers since Willis joined the team on the eve of the 2024 season. The former Liberty standout won two games in Love's stead and stepped up admirably on several other occasions, fashioning an impressive 134.6 passer rating in 11 appearances for Green Bay.

With Taylor set to replace Willis, it marks the first time the Packers have had a quarterback older than 30 on their roster since trading Rodgers to the New York Jets in 2023.

Still only 27 years old himself, Love has made significant progress during each of his three years as the Packers' starting quarterback while emerging as one of the league's young stars.

Love is one of only three QBs to throw 80-plus touchdown passes with fewer than 30 interceptions since 2023. The other two? Reigning MVP Matthew Stafford and Lamar Jackson, a two-time MVP in his own right.

Over that same three-year stretch, Love ranks sixth in the NFL in TD passes (80), seventh in passing-TD percentage (5.5), eighth in passing yards (10,929) and tied for second in passes of 25-plus yards (102).

The 6-foot-4, 226-pound quarterback looks to keep the momentum going with a new backup in Taylor and the return of quarterback coach Luke Getsy, who's back leading the room after Sean Mannion was hired as the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator.

Getsy was Love's first QB coach in Green Bay. He served in that capacity until 2022 when Chicago tabbed Getsy as its offensive coordinator, a position he held for two seasons.

The veteran coach is tasked with more than just molding Love's mechanics but also developing first-year quarterbackKyle McCordand undrafted rookieKyron Drones, who like Taylor played at Virginia Tech.

The two young quarterbacks are vying for an open third-string job after Green Bay parted ways with both Clayton Tune and Desmond Ridder following the 2025 season.

McCord entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick last year for Philadelphia, spending the entirety of his rookie season on the Eagles' practice squad before signing a futures deal with the Packers in January.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound quarterback started one year at Ohio State before transferring to Syracuse as a senior in 2024. He proceeded to shatter the Atlantic Coast Conference record for single-season passing yards (4,779) while setting school records for completions (391) and passing touchdowns (34).

Like McCord, Drones split his college career between two stops. The 6-foot-2, 226-pound quarterback spent his first two years at Baylor before transferring to Virigina Tech in 2023.

Drones quickly won the starting job, a position he held for three seasons while throwing for 5,566 yards, rushing for another 1,798 and contributing 68 touchdowns (45 passing, 22 rushing, one receiving).

Beyond just their positional battle, McCord and Drones look to become the first third-string quarterback to crack the Packers' initial 53-man roster since Love's rookie season in 2020 when Green Bay's future starting QB joined Rodgers and Tim Boyle.
