WASHINGTON D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump has said his administration will launch an investigation into the European Union after regulators imposed a €890 million ($1 billion) antitrust fine on Alphabet's Google, accusing the bloc of unfairly targeting American companies.
The European Commission Thursday fined Google for violating EU rules designed to curb the market power of major technology companies.
Responding to the decision, Trump criticized the penalty in a social media post and said the United States would initiate a trade investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. "We will immediately initiate a 301 Investigation into the practice of "ROBBING" American Companies," Trump said in a social media post, referring to Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
He also warned of consequences for the European Union over its action against Google. "The European Union will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct," he wrote.
