SAN FRANCISCO, California: Anthropic said on August 5 that it is building an in-house team to design custom chips for its Claude artificial intelligence models, confirming an earlier report as it looks to address shortages of the hardware needed to train and run increasingly advanced AI systems.
The startup said it is hiring engineers with expertise across hardware and software to help co-design custom chips and AI models that will enable Claude to run faster and more efficiently at the scale required by customers.
Reuters first reported in April that Anthropic was considering designing its own AI chips.
The company said custom silicon represents the latest step in its multi-chip strategy and that it will continue to rely on a diversified hardware platform that includes technology from Amazon Web Services, Google, Nvidia and AMD.
Anthropic did not provide a timeline for its chip plans or say whether it intends to manufacture the chips itself.
Designing an advanced AI chip can cost roughly half a billion dollars, according to industry sources, as companies must hire highly skilled engineers and invest heavily to ensure the manufacturing process is free of defects.
