Carson Benge belted a two-run homer Wednesday and six New York Met pitchers held the visiting San Diego Padres to five hits in a 4-2 victory.
Starter Robert Stock carried a no-hitter into the fifth before Xander Bogaerts led off with a double. One out later, Fernando Tatis Jr. lined an RBI double to left-center, knocking Stock from the box after 4 1/3 innings, two hits, a run, three walks and six strikeouts.
Rookie Nate Lavender (1-0) retired all three hitters he faced after Ty France's leadoff double in the sixth for his first major league win. Kodai Senga pitched the ninth for his fourth save in as many chances.
Michael King (8-9) absorbed the loss despite logging a quality start. He permitted four hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings, walking two and fanning four in a 100-pitch performance.
King mowed down the first nine hitters he faced on just 31 pitches before finding trouble in the fourth. A.J. Ewing singled before Francisco Lindor rolled into a rare 2-6-3 double play by failing to run the ball out of the box.
But a two-out walk to Bo Bichette extended the inning before Benge took a 3-2 sinker an estimated 356 feet, just over the left field wall. It was Benge's 15th homer of the year.
New York added insurance in the eighth with two runs off Jeremiah Estrada. A slow roller to short by Bichette became one run when Sung-Mun Song, attempting to start a double play, threw the ball past Jake Cronenworth into right field to score Ewing. Jared Young added a two-out RBI single against Yuki Matsui to cash in Bichette.
San Diego missed on early chances to take advantage of Stock's wildness. He walked Tatis and France in the first before striking out Jackson Merrill to end the inning. Luis Campusano walked and Bogaerts was hit with one out in the second but Song flew out and Tatis lined out.
Gavin Sheets had a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth but Senga induced a double-play ball from pinch-hitter Austin Hays to end it.
