BERLIN, Germany: U.S. defense company Covenant is planning to manufacture intermediate-range missiles near Leipzig starting in 2027, as Germany seeks more affordable cruise missiles that can be deployed in large numbers, sources told Reuters on August 28.
The planned missiles would have a range of more than 1,500 kilometers, while annual production capacity could eventually reach as many as 1,000 units, the sources said.
Although Covenant is a U.S. company, most of the components required for production are expected to come from Germany and other European countries, the sources said.
Covenant and Germany's defense ministry declined to comment.
The project comes as Berlin searches for less expensive options supplied domestically and within Europe to supplement more costly long-range weapons systems and address what officials regard as a capability gap.
Germany's efforts to find alternatives became more urgent after the United States, despite earlier announcements, no longer planned to supply the country with Tomahawk cruise missiles, according to the sources. That development prompted Berlin to look for other options.
