KYIV, Ukraine: Russia launched several waves of drone attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region on Friday, damaging homes and warehouses for the second day in a row. Ukrainian officials said the attacks appeared to be aimed at disrupting everyday life for millions of people.

At least one person was killed in the Kyiv region, according to Governor Tymur Tkachenko. He said the attacks damaged 14 warehouse sites, 16 houses and three apartment buildings.

Air-raid sirens sounded repeatedly across Kyiv during the morning. The latest strikes came one day after Russia carried out a major missile and drone attack on several parts of Ukraine, including Kyiv. The August 27 attacks hit major retailers and logistics facilities, causing serious disruption to transport and deliveries.

The disruption continued on August 28. Nova Poshta, Ukraine's largest private courier company, said Russian strikes destroyed sorting centers near Kyiv and in the northern city of Sumy. The facilities processed and moved large numbers of packages.

In Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine, a Russian drone struck a large Epicenter home-improvement store, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov. At least four people were injured in the attack.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service said the Kyiv region had come under attack 38 times during the previous 24 hours. It urged residents to stay away from areas where firefighters were still working to put out fires caused by the strikes.

The attacks appeared to extend the disruption caused by the previous day's bombardment. Thursday's strikes had caused major delays to train services across several regions, leaving many passengers waiting for long periods.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, said Russia was using waves of relatively small numbers of jet-powered drones as part of an effort to disrupt life in the capital. "The enemy is launching small numbers of jet-powered UAVs in waves with the aim of paralyzing Kyiv," he said.

Ukraine's state railway operator said train delays were slowly improving. However, it warned that repeated attacks and air-raid warnings would continue to affect services for at least another day.

Ukraine's foreign ministry highlighted the scale of the disruption in Kyiv, saying the capital had remained under an air-raid alert for almost 15 hours on August 27.

Russian forces also attacked a shopping center in Kharkiv, a major city in northeastern Ukraine, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. It was the second attack on a shopping center in the city within two days.

The recent strikes come as Russia and Ukraine have increasingly targeted each other's commercial and logistics networks. Both sides have attacked facilities connected to online retailers, warehouses, delivery companies and other parts of the consumer economy in an effort to weaken the other side's ability to support the war.

Another Russian drone strike on August 28 destroyed a warehouse belonging to a major Ukrainian book retailer in the Kyiv region. The company said the warehouse had been used to send thousands of books to customers every day.

The repeated attacks on warehouses, delivery centers and retail facilities have added to the wider disruption caused by the war. Ukrainian authorities are now dealing not only with damage to homes and businesses but also with interruptions to transport, deliveries and other services used by millions of people.
