OTTAWA, Canada: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Canada on September 10 for talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney, seeking to secure continued international support as Ukraine fights Russia's invasion.
Zelenskyy's visit comes as Ukraine faces growing pressure from Russia's air campaign. Russian forces have been using ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones to attack Ukrainian cities and weaken air defenses. Ukrainian officials say Moscow has also been targeting the country's power system ahead of winter in an effort to damage infrastructure and lower civilian morale.
More than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion, U.S. efforts to end the war have yet to produce a breakthrough. Washington has helped arrange talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, and those discussions are expected to continue.
Zelenskyy said his main goals in Canada would be to protect Ukraine's skies and prepare for winter. He also said the talks would focus on strengthening Ukraine's ability to withstand Russian attacks and ensuring that the country has the equipment needed for its defense.
The Ukrainian president arrived in Calgary, Alberta, on the night of September 9. His journey from Moldova to Norway had been delayed a day earlier after authorities closed Moldovan airspace because of a reported drone incursion.
The use of drones in the Russia-Ukraine war has increased sharply since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukraine's neighbors Romania and Moldova have also repeatedly reported drones entering their airspace, highlighting the growing regional risks from the conflict.
Meanwhile, attacks continued on both sides.
A Ukrainian sea drone wounded 28 people, including two children, on the waterfront in the Russian resort city of Sochi, according to local officials. They said the attack also damaged beach facilities but provided no further details.
Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces destroyed 448 Ukrainian drones during overnight attacks on September 10. It said the drones were intercepted over 13 Russian regions, as well as Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and areas of the Black and Caspian seas.
In Russia's southwestern Voronezh region, falling debris from a Ukrainian drone started a fire at a house, regional Governor Alexander Gusev said on September 10. One woman was killed, and two other people were injured in the incident.
