NEW YORK, New York - U.S. stocks closed broadly higher on Thursday, with the Nasdaq leading the charge as all three major indexes posted solid gains, a day after the Federal Reserve lifted official interest rates for the first time in three years
The Standard and Poor's 500 closed at 7,637.76, up 85.95 points, a gain of 1.14 percent, on volume of 2.849B. The index traded between 7,611.81 and 7,646.86 during the session, within a 52-week range of 6,316.91 to 7,816.70.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished at 51,778.04, up 316.14 points or 0.61 percent, on volume of 402.619M. Its session range was 51,607.65 to 51,935.97, against a 52-week range of 45,057.28 to 54,744.33.
The NASDAQ Composite posted the strongest gain of the day, closing at 26,418.30, up 439.88 points or 1.69 percent, on volume of 8.173B. The index moved between 26,289.94 and 26,460.64, within a 52-week range of 20,690.25 to 27,190.21.
Thursday's session delivered a clean sweep of gains across U.S. equities, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq outpacing its peers and the Dow posting a more modest but still firm advance.
U.S. Dollar Softens as Most Major Currencies Edge Higher; British Pound the Lone Decliner
The U.S. dollar weakened against most major currencies on Thursday, with nearly every major pair moving in the green — except for the British pound, while Canada's currency held flat against its U.S. counterpart.
The euro advanced against the dollar, with EUR-USD rising 0.12 percent to 1.1479.
The Japanese yen also gained ground, as USD-JPY moved 0.20 percent to 155.9500.
The British pound was the sole major currency to slip versus the greenback, with GBP-USD falling 0.17 percent to 1.3358.
The Australian dollar posted one of the stronger moves of the session, with AUD-USD climbing 0.32 percent to 0.7111.
Canada's dollar was essentially unchanged, with USD-CAD inching up just 0.01 percent to 1.3989.
The Swiss franc edged higher against the dollar, with USD-CHF up 0.15 percent to 0.8245.
Thursday's session painted a broadly softer picture for the dollar, with the euro, yen, Australian dollar and Swiss franc all making modest gains, while sterling bucked the trend and the loonie treaded water.
World Equity Markets Mostly Higher Thursday as European and Asian Indexes Diverge
World stock markets closed mostly higher on Thursday, with Canadian, UK, and European benchmarks posting broad gains while several Asian indexes slipped into negative territory.
In Canada, the S&P/TSX Composite index also closed higher, finishing at 35,874.26, up 382.99 points or 1.08 percent, on volume of 195.872M. It traded between 35,724.62 and 35,920.13 on the day.
In London, the FTSE 100 closed at 10,816.14, up 127.67 points, a gain of 1.19 percent. The index traded between a low of 10,688.91 and a high of 10,823.00 on the day, against a 52-week range of 9,177.10 to 10,989.50.
On the European continent, Germany's DAX P finished at 25,716.71, up 178.96 points or 0.70 percent. Its session range stood at 25,596.05 to 25,800.62, with a 52-week range of 21,863.81 to 26,618.74.
The CAC 40 in Paris closed at 8,186.93, up 46.34 points, or 0.57 percent. The index moved between 8,142.16 and 8,209.67 during the session, within a 52-week range of 7,505.27 to 8,755.03.
The EURO STOXX 50 I ended at 6,322.90, up 56.40 points or 0.90 percent, after trading between 6,285.15 and 6,337.66. Its 52-week range is 5,376.81 to 6,577.20.
The Euronext 100 Index closed at 1,899.27, up 12.19 points, a gain of 0.65 percent. It traded between 1,891.07 and 1,903.24, against a 52-week range of 1,615.32 to 1,984.60.
In Brussels, the BEL 20 finished at 5,777.27 on Thursday, up 43.78 points or 0.76 percent. The index's session range was 5,750.25 to 5,788.58, with a 52-week range of 4,631.38 to 5,905.83.
In Asia, Hong Kong's HANG SENG INDEX closed lower at 24,604.29, down 109.49 points, a decline of 0.44 percent. It traded between 24,357.69 and 24,606.15, within a 52-week range of 22,518.00 to 28,056.10.
In mainland China, the SSE Composite Index fell to 3,875.60, down 16.00 points or 0.41 percent, on volume of 2.339B. It traded between 3,866.89 and 3,898.84, against a 52-week range of 3,741.11 to 4,258.86.
Japan's Nikkei 225 closed at 64,136.25, up 213.25 points, a gain of 0 percent.
In Singapore, the STI Index rose to 5,660.52, up 25.11 points or 0.45 percent. Its session range was 5,637.86 to 5,671.13, against a 52-week range of 4,264.99 to 5,828.50.
In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 [XJO] closed at 8,732.40, up 35.90 points or 0.41 percent, after trading between 8,696.50 and 8,787.10. Its 52-week range is 8,262.40 to 9,296.70. The broader ALL ORDINARIES [XAO] finished at 8,910.90, up 36.40 points, also 0.41 percent, with a session range of 8,874.50 to 8,961.10 and a 52-week range of 8,454.90 to 9,474.80.
New Zealand's S&P/NZX 50 INDEX GROSS, meantime, rose to 13,756.59, up 133.87 points or 0.98 percent. It traded between 13,616.01 and 13,759.18, within a 52-week range of 12,689.78 to 14,069.22.
India's S&P BSE SENSEX edged down to 74,314.59, losing 21.86 points or 0.03 percent. It traded between 74,163.95 and 74,677.56, within a 52-week range of 71,545.81 to 86,159.02.
In Indonesia, the IDX COMPOSITE gained ground, closing at 6,462.43, up 25.58 points or 0.40 percent. Its session range was 6,418.13 to 6,500.41, against a 52-week range of 5,317.91 to 9,174.47.
The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI slipped to 1,674.74, down 4.47 points or 0.27 percent, after trading between 1,670.75 and 1,684.92. Its 52-week range is 1,595.04 to 1,771.25.
South Korea's KOSPI Composite Index closed slightly lower at 6,715.41, down 2.56 points or 0.04 percent. Its 52-week range is 9,385.59.
In Taiwan, the TSEC CAPITALIZATION WEIGHTED ST gained 439.10 points, or 0.96 percent, to close at 46,288.00. The index traded between 45,936.11 and 46,874.84, against a 52-week range of 25,469.04 to 48,218.87.
In the Middle East, Israel's TA-125 finished at 4,164.35, up 39.00 points or 0.95 percent, after trading between 4,138.38 and 4,175.98. Its 52-week range is 3,023.40 to 4,588.51.
In Egypt, the EGX 30 Price Return Index climbed to 55,498.70, up 676.00 points or 1.23 percent, on volume of 290.758M. The index's session range was 54,673.80 to 55,578.00, identical to its 52-week range.
South Africa's Top 40 USD Net TRI Index closed at 7,040.92, up 37.47 points or 0.54 percent. It traded between 6,971.53 and 7,082.45, within a 52-week range of 5,968.01 to 8,184.71.
