SEOUL, South Korea: Eight people were injured in a knife attack at a supermarket in Incheon, South Korea, on October 13, with a woman in her 20s suffering cardiac arrest, police said.
Police arrested a male suspect at the scene and launched an investigation into the motive and circumstances of the attack.
According to a witness quoted by Yonhap News Agency, the suspect appeared to have knives attached to both hands. He reportedly moved through several floors of the shopping complex, attacking people before bystanders subdued him and handed him over to police.
South Korean media reported that the suspect was a man in his 60s who was wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet.
The eight victims included six women and two men. The woman who suffered cardiac arrest was among those injured, according to media reports. Further details about the victims' conditions were not immediately available.
Incheon lies west of Seoul and is home to South Korea's main international airport. The city is part of the wider Seoul metropolitan area.
South Korea's History of Stabbing Attacks
The attack comes after a series of stabbing rampages shocked South Korea in 2023. Several incidents that year left multiple people dead and injured, raising concerns about public safety.
In May, a 17-year-old girl was fatally stabbed, and another teenager was injured in the southwestern city of Gwangju. The attacker, a man in his 20s, was later sentenced to life in prison.
Police are continuing to investigate the latest incident in Incheon, including the suspect's motive and the events leading up to the attack.
